Finland’s president Alexander Stubb speaks on meeting with President Trump | NATO | EU |Golf

Finland’s president says in London he heard no serious US talk about NATO withdrawal

Finland’s President Alexander Stubb said on Monday (March 31) that he had not yet heard from anyone serious in the United States administration that the U.S. would withdraw from NATO.
His remarks came shortly after Stubb on Saturday had made a surprise trip to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida, where they discussed different topics and also played a round of golf.
Stubb said Trump’s pressure on European nations to spend more on defence was “correct” referring to the U.S. president’s repeated demand that NATO members ramp up spending and questioning his country’s predominant bankrolling of NATO.
When asked about the meeting with Trump, Stubb, who was speaking at an event at London School of Economics, said his father had told him that, one day, golf would be “useful at some stage.”
“I come from a small country, to spend seven hours with the president of the United States, you don’t do that in a meeting room,” Stubb said.
