Golf star Scottie Scheffler has revealed that he has not been particularly focused on his most recent achievement, despite the success putting him on course to reach the heights of all-time great Tiger Woods. The reigning Masters champion has impressed over the past few years, and his consistency around the world has meant that he has remained as world No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Scheffler rose to the top of the rankings after he finished second at the 2022 PGA Championship and he has continued to dominate since. The American star has enjoyed 97 consecutive weeks as world No. 1, eclipsing Greg Norman’s record of 95 weeks.

Despite the achievement, Scheffler is still a distance away from spending the most consecutive weeks at the top of the charts. Woods remarkably spent 281 weeks as world No.1, spanning from 2005 to 2010.

Speaking ahead of the Houston Open, Scheffler revealed that he hasn’t given his record much thought but appreciated that it did highlight that his hard work has paid off.

He said: “I think it’s something cool to see from some good starts I’ve had in the last couple of years. You know, I definitely put in a lot of work to have that type of achievement.

“Tiger’s still got the record by about like eight years or something like that. No, [I am] not really thinking about it too much, but at the end of the day, each tournament is a tournament, and you start even par.

“Showing up here being No.1 in the world doesn’t do me any good; it just simply doesn’t. At the end of the day, I’m focused on the tournament and the task at hand. The rankings are the rankings, I don’t really care what they are.”

Scheffler enjoyed a strong showing in the opening round of the Houston Open – his last PGA Tour event before heading to the Masters. The 28-year-old enjoyed a bogey-free start, hitting three bogeys and finding his rhythm on the back nine.

Scheffler will be hoping to bag his maiden win of the season at the Memorial Park Golf Course before he looks to defend his Masters title at Augusta National next month.
