Putting SLH on Soft compound tires when every driver save one other back marker was using the Medium or Hard tires was such an obvious setup for failure there is no explanation that can be made in defense of that decision by the team and it’s decision makers. I highly suspect it was not SLH’s decision to do so. Unless he comes out publicly and says otherwise I will continue to believe it was a team decision. Why then was the anointed one, not a king George sent out with medium compound tires? He was behind Sir Lewis on the grid and would have been a better option if they actually believed one of their drivers could advance quickly thru the chaos on the first turn or two and or be betting on a safety car/red flag to clean up the mess from a potential accident during the first few laps, allowing a quick pit stop to swap the soft for medium or hard. That is a shitty bet if I have ever heard one. I don’t buy it and remain convinced the decision was made to further advance team goals of increased wind tunnel testing time and other operational advantages for the team for next season and beyond. Happens in baseball every year when a team’s owner’s feel there is zero chance of reaching the post season playoffs and they just trade off any valuable players for whatever they can get and tank the remaining games in order to raise their chances of getting to pick higher towards the top of the cue in the draft of new players for the next season. Happens in basketball, too. Considering the amount of money involved I think sports like F1, the NFL, NBA and MLB not to mention soccer (ok, football for the folks who consider it by the same name) though I must say I know precisely zero about how the pro leagues work in that regard to be totally honest, would benefit from closer government oversight into how these “sporting” leagues operate. It would take some careful study to figure out how to do that without making things insanely worse for both players and fans, I understand, but until there is some method of ensuring that the systems in place are not being gamed by owners/teams I remain convinced the product being displayed on the field/track isn’t always what it seems to the average viewer. I think Lewis has resigned to the fact Mercedes will do what is needed to get Russell ahead in quali and the race "by any means" and its obvious. Mercedes are desperate to have the wofld see Russell as a superstar driver but he is not and that will become apparent very soon once Lesis has gone. Just imagine Mercedes are having to do all that they are doing just to give Russell a chance it really has become comedy gold. Prior to 2024 there had been a safety car deployed in Singapore at every race, with the deployment averaging (I know you love an average) on lap 14, relatively early for a 62 lap race.
So putting on a scrubbed set of softs for the early race, and hoping for a safety car, really wasn’t a bad move in theory. Hindsight is 20/20 however.
Gambling on this strategy (that Lewis would also have agreed with) doesn’t make Toto involved in fraud, spot fixing or to address a later point is involved with “some Jeffery Epstein character” which is just disgusting.
The team which gave Hamilton 6 world championships and THE BEST car for 8 CONSECUTIVE YEARS, which no other driver in F1 history has ever had, are getting way too much disrespect.
