In just over a week, a decades-old golf course in Rancho Mirage will undergo sweeping renovations intended to give it a new look — and make it a more exciting place to hit the green.

“This renovation is a significant step forward for The Springs, ensuring the golf course maintains its historic and significant place among the great private courses in the Coachella Valley,” Springs Homeowners Owners Association Board of Directors President Joan Boomsma said. “By implementing these thoughtful — and often sustainable — upgrades, we are improving the playability of the course without sacrificing its difficulty.”

The $16 million project will get underway on April 7 and is expected to wrap up by November.

Golf course designer Desmond Muirhead and architect Cary Bickler are collaborating on the revamp, according to the HOA.

The course has been around since the housing development, located near the intersection of Country Club and Bob Hope drives, was established almost exactly 50 years ago. The renovation is part of a 50th anniversary celebration.

Changes will include a redo of the driving range, improved safety features for golfers of all ages, improvements to drainage and irrigation systems and “selective tree removal” to make the green more spacious, according to the HOA.

Springs General Manager Dennis Petrash said that the HOA board “assembled a team of professionals with decades of proven success to get the job done.”
