Disc golf has been gaining popularity over the years, but did you know it actually dates back to the early 1960s? That’s according to Wikipedia who also states while the exact origins are up for debate, different versions of the game were being played as early as 1964 in places like Houston, TX, Augusta, GA, and Santa Barbara, CA.
For those unfamiliar, disc golf is exactly what it sounds like—a mix of frisbee and golf. Instead of smacking a tiny ball into a hole, players toss a disc (similar to a frisbee) into a metal basket or target. The goal? Complete the course in the fewest throws possible. Like traditional golf, disc golf requires precision, strategy, and a bit of luck as players navigate trees, bushes, and tricky terrain.
Maine has become a hotbed for the sport, boasting over 80 disc golf courses statewide. Of course, locations and hours change so it’s always good to check their website or call ahead to make sure that your go-to course is open.
