WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (KUTV) — An investigation into bones found near a golf course in West Valley City is now underway—leaving people in the area shocked and police working to sort out who it could be.

West Valley City Police say someone out fishing on one of the ponds near the Stonebridge Golf Course spotted a human skull near the edge of the water. Local police were called out around 7:00pm Tuesday evening.

“That’s wild. I would have never thought that here,” said Bryon Salisbury, a golfer at Stonebridge.

Golfers out enjoying the Wednesday morning sunshine were shocked to hear about the disturbing discover on a private property off of a large pond on Stonebridge Golf Course. “I heard it on the news last night, it’s kind of shocking,” said Brad Ball, another golfer at Stonebridge.

Tuesday night, an angler on the water spotted bones at the edge of the pond in shallow water. “We played yesterday from 12:00 till about 5:00pm,” Ball said, “My wife and I kind of looked at each other like, ‘eugh!’ You know, was somebody in the water when we were out there?”

West Valley City Police were called out, and confirmed the remains were human.

“So we called in the medical examiner’s office—they came in, they collected the remains, and they are now in that process of trying to identify who that might be and if possible—exactly what happened,” said Roxeanne Vainuku, public information officer for West Valley City. At this point, it’s too early to say whether it was foul play, or how long the body had been there.

“Obviously the fact that we are dealing with bones, that does indicate at least time or maybe exposure, things like that. That’s not something we’ll be able to determine, that’s something the medical examiner’s office will take a look at,” Vainuku said.

Meanwhile, many are left in disbelief.

“I would never think of that on any golf course, really, to find human remains in a pond,” Salisbury said.

Police said they will be combing through missing persons cases to try to figure out who this might be.
