Absolutely loved this one, verified a lot of what I have been thinking. Still waiting on you eating crow on the Square being the best LM under 3K. Thanks and keep them coming.
I've been listening this this gentleman on a podcast, he has some of the best takes on equipment around.
Absolutely love this video. Bob is one of the smartest men in Golf. I love Maple Hill. I make special trips from Lansing to Grand Rapids to buy all my golf equipment. Well done.
I’m a high handicapper 66 year old thinking about single length irons…Is that a good idea?
Club fitting boosts: This has happened to me on a couple of occasions.
The first club fitting was a free fitting with Taylor Made at a local golf course. I warned up a bit on the range with my own clubs BEFORE I went over to the club fitting tent. I used my own speed device (PRGR) to get my personal average of my own 7-iron. I went over to the club fitting tent and began hitting their 7-irons. The rep tells me I was hitting 10-15 yards more than I was hitting my own 7-iron.
I asked him one question–are these numbers carry or with rollout? He said with rollout. I asked him what my carry numbers were. Yep, they were the same as my own clubs.
The second time this happened was with a PXG rep at a PXG location. I warmed up on a nearby range BEFORE heading to the PXG store. ALWAYS WARM UP FIRST! Then he had me hit several 6 irons. The PXG irons were going roughly 10-12 yards longer than my own. I was left scratching my head, "How could this be?"
I asked him two questions–what is the loft on your PXG 6-iron AND could you please measure the loft on MY FIVE IRON? Turns out, PXG 6-iron was the same loft as my 5-iron. Hence, their six iron was going 10 yards more than my six iron.
Man do I argue with my buddy about getting lessons. He buys new clubs all the time and thinks he's going to magically get better. I'm like dude you could've taken that $650 you just spent on that bag trophy on lessons that would make you better overall. Instead he buys 3 more irons and an old simulator from someone 😂

Do u think that we should lower to club limit to 12 or even 10 clubs. I think the less clubs people have, the less they need to worry about. Also it would make the pros have to manipulate and create more shots with the gaps this will make in the bag. I know it will never happen as the golf companies want to sell more clubs not less to consumers. The reason I said this was that I played pretty well one time when we had a 3 club event, I took a 6 iron, Pw and a putter. Almost broke par. Took a lot of the thinking out of it. Too far for the wedge, 6 iron it is. Need a short shot, wedge it is. Just really simple golf shots but I think my expectations were low aswell which helped
Agree completely with the topic of what balls to play. You don't need to play the most expensive balls, but what I would say is that if you are wanting to play more consistent, then I would play the same ball.
Increased flexibility leads to more inaccuracy in contact of the head of club with the ball. Way too much movement in all axis.
I think it was Bryson on YouTube that said many long drive guys are going to softer shafts.
Lessons certainly sounds like the ego-free choice to improve your golf game vs a $500 club…. But, unfortunately many golf pros stink… just watch 50 YouTube golf pros…or go to your local golf course and you’ll see just about every approach to teaching golf you could imagine… my guess is many will hurt you more than will help you. Buyer beware. I loved your advice to educate yourself first and maybe buy a trio of lessons…. Then hit the range…a lot.
Great video. I am not falling for this years newest bestever club- I will wait till next year. LOL.
Everyone learns differently. Lessons fuck me. Started golf at 32 years old hit scratch by 35 no lessons. Gotta know your self to improve and trust that not what others say
On shaft stiffness: Kyle Berkshire, best LD competitor in the world, uses an R flex shaft in competition…
Fred Couples always said: Play the SOFTEST shaft you can CONTROL.
I really liked this video and more golfers should see this. I recently had a “fitting.” I call it a “fitting” because it was not what I would do to help someone find a golf shaft the proper weight, stiffness, grip size, lie angle. You know the things that REALLY matter. I was (in my younger years) a scratch golfer and play with much more traditional irons. This “fitter” did not do much in the way of really helping. It would seem his goal was to find a way to have me hit the ball further. When in fact I was not making consistent solid impact on the club face. Hell, I had not played golf more than 10 times in over 10 years! He would delete the bad shots and keep the good ones. In the end, based the “fitting” on 5 to 8 decent/good shots! That is ludicrous! Because I had good knowledge to start with… I did not purchase the $1400 irons, or the $750 driver. People, distance is NOT king! I carried 4 wedges that were lofted to cover 70 – 125 yards with a full swing. You don’t need a wedge that goes 150 yards!!! It is funny to me. So, YES, the clubs have been taken too far simply to sell a set of clubs… and the price of shafts alone, ridiculous!
As a senior golfer with a slow (80 mph) swing speed, I think choosing the right ball is important. I've found that low compression balls travel further and feel much better at impact than the Pro V1. To me the Pro V feels like hitting a rock. If I find a Pro V in the woods, I'll give it to a playing partner.
I can break par with a Tru-feel ball 80% of the time. I use a Pro V1/ 3piece Urethane balls it s 20% if i am lucky. So it is 2 piece 70 compression please ionomer.
My theory is the Urethane cover grips the face too much and make a slight face error bigger. 3 piece Ionomer are fine too.
Driver shafts! I can hit my daughters L Flex even flow 20 yards past my X flex driver at 105 MPH. Totally agree with the ladies flex conclusion.
I have tried the softest shaft using my friend's driver, oh my I did not have to swing fast to get an easy 220m. That is when I found stiffer is not for me.
Yes, technology does increase over time. 3-6 years is an accurate span for upgrading.
On a historical note, the number on the iron was originally based on descent angle in the early years of head manufacturing. Kind of a QA stamp after the club was built. The loft and lie consistency greatly varied, much greater than today. The number would be stamped after construction and field test to where the club would fit in the bag order.
Where are you getting 7 lessons for $500….
Lessons are important too as etiquette needs learning too not just improving the swing
I went to CC for a fitting 2 years ago. When my fitter had to step away for a minute, I checked out the simulator settings. Sea level, no wind, nothing out of the ordinary. Got done with irons and moved on to driver. Ended up keeping my driver head, standard 9° Paradym, just changed the shaft. Went from a 65g Tour AD X-flex to a Rogue White 60R. The guy said he would love to sell me a new driver, but I didn't need one. I was an 18hc at the time, got Cobra King Tour irons bent 2° weak and Cleveland RTX6 wedges. Today I'm a 12hc. Working on getting under 10 in 2025. Really happy I found a good, honest fitter.
I'm also a professional fitter. This guy is 100% on point.
Rules are stupid. Allow stupid oversized clubs w massive sweet spot. Swing it 60 or 90 mph it launches like a pro hit it. Everybody has more fun everybody plays faster. So a 12 becomes a 2 w the cheater clubs. Who cares go defend the 2 hc
The most sensible insight I've heard in a long time. The reasoning and and factual info will still be ignored by most but at least we were given honest and clear advice.
I've been thinking about flex for awhile. I think Hogan had the right idea with a number system. Calling the more flexible shafts seniors or ladies is just going to cause many people (guys) to choose the wrong shaft. Hooray for Mr. Rodriguez setting ego aside for performance.
