The PGA Tour Florida Swing concludes this week with the Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course playing host to the Valspar Championship. It is not considered one of the more difficult tracks on Tour. Yet, players like Sahith Theegala may disagree.

During Friday’s second round, the 27-year-old rising star shanked his tee shot on the par-3 4th, sending the ball into the greenside bunker as he dropped his club.

That is when Theegala’s frustration took over.

He picked up his iron and violently chucked it toward the woods. The Golf Channel announcers can be heard laughing at the development, but he likely does not find it as funny.

The PGA Tour often fines players for behavior ‘unbecoming of a professional.’ That is about as unprofessional as golfers get on the PGA Tour.

So Theegala can expect a letter from the Tour in short order.

He is not the only one to have an outburst this week.

During Thursday’s opening round, Patton Kizzire punted his putter across the green after missing a short par putt. He later withdrew citing a lower back injury.

All the while, Theegala found a way to get up-and-down for par on that hole. He is actually playing pretty well this week.

The Pepperdine graduate finished his round 1-over, but sits at 1-under for the tournament. That places him in a tie for 24th, as of this writing.

Maybe it was just a momentary lapse of judgment. Or, maybe, it was growing frustration from what has been a disappointing start to his PGA Tour season.

Theegala has made the cut in seven of eight tournaments this year. But that is where the good news ends.

Of those seven cuts, he has just one top 20 finish, a T17 at the Genesis Invitational. Otherwise, Theegala has four finishes outside the top 50 and two others where he did not crack 36th.

If he can manage his emotions a bit better this weekend though, he may be looking at his best finish of the season.
