**Understanding the Shoe Optimisation Process**

We were fortunate to have Chris Murtagh guide us through the intricate process of shoe optimisation. The facility is a golfer’s dream, equipped with a TrackMan for precise ball and club data, and a biomechanical force plate to meticulously analyse pressure and movement during your swing.

Chris explained that the journey begins with understanding your unique “swing signature.” This involves capturing data on your backswing, coil, and load, all with the goal of optimising performance, potentially adding distance and improving consistency.

**Initial Measurements and Calibration**

My session started with hitting a few shots using my trusty club. The TrackMan provided raw data, giving us a baseline for my performance. Then, it was time to calibrate the force plate. This crucial step measures how I distribute weight during my swing, ensuring accurate analysis.

**Decoding the Data: What It Means for Your Swing**

Reviewing the data from the force plate, Chris highlighted some key points. The analysis revealed that I was moving laterally during my swing, resulting in lower peak force measurements. This is significant because it indicates a potential for improved traction and stability.

Chris explained that many golfers underestimate the impact of footwear on their swing dynamics. The peak force measurement, representing how effectively you transfer energy into your swing, should ideally be closer to 1.5 to 2.0 times your body weight for optimal performance.

**Choosing the Right Footwear: Spiked vs. Spikeless**

A crucial discussion revolved around spiked versus spikeless shoes. While many golfers choose based on seasonal conditions (spiked for wet, spikeless for dry), Chris emphasised that your swing dynamics should also dictate your choice.

For someone like me, who needed to increase peak force, Chris recommended spiked shoes. These provide enhanced traction, maximising energy transfer during the swing. The optimisation process is about matching the shoe to your unique swing mechanics.

**Fitting the Right Shoe: The Dry Pro Spike Shoe**

Based on my swing data, I tried on the Under Armour Dry Pro Spike Shoe. Chris explained that this model is designed for maximum support and stability. The lacing system, inspired by trail running, ensures a snug fit that connects the midfoot to the shoe.

The immediate difference was palpable. The shoe felt tight yet comfortable, and Chris advised adjusting the lacing during play as my feet swell. This attention to detail is what distinguishes high-performance footwear.

**Understanding the Biomechanics of Your Feet**

Another fascinating aspect was the analysis of my foot structure. Chris identified that my left foot tended to pronate more than my right. This detail is crucial for power generation during my swing.

To address this, Chris created custom insoles to provide better arch support for my left foot. This bespoke approach ensures that my footwear enhances performance by addressing specific biomechanical needs.

**The Impact of Custom Insoles**

Testing the custom insoles on the course, I experienced a more natural foot position, allowing me to engage my core and legs more effectively. This resulted in consistent strikes and tighter dispersion.

The combination of optimised footwear and custom insoles highlighted the importance of an individualised approach. It’s not just about the shoe; it’s about how the shoe interacts with your unique body mechanics.

**Conclusion: Elevating Your Game through Footwear**

Our visit to the Under Armour Footwear Performance Centre was a revelation. It underscored the importance of optimising footwear in golf, not just as a fashion statement, but as a critical piece of equipment.

The advancements in golf shoe technology are empowering golfers to enhance their game. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner, investing in the right footwear can make a significant difference.

  1. Interesting! If my short game is awful and I'm still 3 putting, I am not sure it will help. For sure my walk to find my balls after a snap hook or banana ball will be much easier.

  2. Love this stuff, I have flat feet and need to find a place like this to get this done. Thank you for all the great videos
