It doesn't need to be a major as golf already has 4 majors. Adding another major at this point would be silly. Do you retroactively give past winners a major title if they won?
With that said, TPC Sawgrass is one of the best courses and tests of golf in the world. The Players is a special tournament that stands up on it's own, it doesn't need to be a major… it's The Players.
Agree that it would be nice to have another major outside of the US, but the players isn’t going anywhere and it’s a force to be reckoned with. Making some other tournament that doesn’t have the strength of field that the players has doesn’t make it a more important tournament just because they call it one. If any major is added it would have to be the players. Way too much history to just bypass. You’d almost have to remove the pga if you didn’t want 5.
Enjoyed this today.
I don’t, next they will be saying the Arnold Palmer invite should be a major too
Nah. You have to undo the other ones first and place them all over the planet like in tennis
Another major in America – nope
Another major held at the same course every year – nope
Another major – nope!
It’s never been and never will be a major!
It’s seems he never gave up before even tieing off
If you want the players to be a major then you have to stop the PGA being a major.
You aren’t getting 4 majors in USA.
Also the second you introduce a 5 major it destroys the record books. It cheapens the achievement if someone like Aberg beats Jack Major record to become the best golfer ever.
How absurd. If there was another major it would have to be from outside the US. Perhaps from East Asia/Pacific region. It is this kind of limited American centrism that led to the establishment of LIV.
Huge Hal Sutton fan, but Sawgrass doesn’t have the teeth for a major. Last year at the midway point the score was 14 under. No doubt it’s a great venue and full of history and one of my favorite tournaments.
If you’ve been to all the tournaments you can feel the major at atmosphere of hype, buzzing, seriousness. Players champ is big but the feel is no means major level. Majors are different
The Players is a major in every conceiable way you may see it, just hgo their and FEEL it
Hal Sutton was a player and pulled it off and beat Tiger that day!
Don't need five majors, the four are fine as is, what is needed are more guaranteed tournaments featuring the very best players from both LIV Golf and the PGA competing against one another with more limited field sizes.
There is no need for more 'Majors'. That is dilution of the historic. The Players is a top flight event. There are many others. The youngest Major was first played in 1934. Let's leave history alone. Making The Players a Major is akin to LIV golf – the rape of a historic game.
Myrtle Beach Classic HAS to be the 5th major. They even have a special content creator pre-qualifier which ensures the ‘best players in the world’ (USA=World btw) from PGAT and YT are present. Who needs LIV, DP, Asian, Japanese tours…
Fu(k me yanks are so far up their own arses, my god 🤦
Watching Hal win TPC back in 2000 and seeing him in person at the Memorial are two of my best golf memories
Hal seems like a good guy but this interview is a bit overblown in terms of the "I can go toe-to-toe with Tiger" and "He's just a man" elements. Hal could have torched Tiger had it not been for Hal making a 6 on 17 in the third round. Plus, Tiger was 1 shot better than Hal over the last three rounds. The reality is that Hal beat Tiger the first day when his 69 bested Tiger by 2. Even Hal admits here Tiger didn't have his best stuff. So let's get real, congratulate Hal on a great victory, but simply say this was what any tournament is: two guy came down the stretch and one guy was a shot better than the other guy. Let's not make this more than it was.
They know it because of a podcast that uses it as it’s open…
Someone tell Hal that it already is. Pro Golf has one big event a month. This is the 5th biggest in the sport
My club championship deserves to be a major as much as the Players – LOL – Maybe the LPGA can just make any event a major but on the PGA??? Please bitches!!!
It would be interesting to see how many times on Sunday when Tiger was leading that he won because nobody caught him. That mentality had krept in that were playing for second.
Nothing against Hal, delighted he’s looking well but The Players doesn’t have sufficient history, and there’s already one too many ‘majors’ in the USA, if count PGA as a ‘major’, which is debatable given its chequered history. The Masters is bona fide because of Bobby Jones but it’s much to golf’s detriment that the 4th major isn’t outside the USA. The PGA should travel world wide returning every 4/5 yrs to the USA.
Hal just wants to retroactively be a multiple major champ
Americans looking at the world through an American lens. Always makes sense 😂
Thus dropping the PGA Championship,,,, or is that America forgetting that the rest of the world plays golf too.
Let's see: Who would suddenly become a multiple major winner if the Players were now called a major and see if they are HOF quality? Let's leave out current (marginal) HOF players: Couples, Wadkins, and Kite. Also, highly probable future (marginal) HOF players: Garcia and Love III. Do the following guys seems like really worthy HOF players: Sutton, Cam Smith, Jason Day, Stenson, Adam Scott, Duval, Elkington, Mahaffey, Pate, and Al Geiberger? All decent, some really good, and perhaps some guys who will be future, really marginal HOFamers. I don't buy Sutton's argument.
I remember that round!!! Was cheering for Hal the whole week!!!!!! Sunday 18th hole was Awesome and I couldn't have been happier on that Sunday!!!!
PGA tour wants a pga controlled event to be a major: shocking. Try to lay it on a little less thick
If ever there was a 5th major which there shouldn't be, it should absolutely not be in America.
Can’t be a major with out the worlds top players and qualifiers to get in
The Players should NEVER be elevated to a major…
No.. Four majors is more than enough.. If anything Wells Fargo Championship deserves to be the 5th major if and when it comes down to that..
I followed Hal around Riviera in ‘83. Jack was on his tail. I saw Hal hit a ball in the deep rough and for several moments he considered going for the green from there. He then changed clubs, hacked it out sideways and got up and down. He won the tournament by one shot. That could have been the difference right there.
And the "You, me..and him" story has now been told 7, 275 times, the exact yardage of Sawgrass.
Where is the other part of Hal talking about how he almost gave up on golf and his dad was telling him to go back to work? I would appreciate this thank you. He really motivated me hearing that
This way he feels like now he’s a major winner
I’ve always loved Hal Sutton. I’d prefer x4 majors with a possibility of the PGA being international
Without ALL the best players in the world playing in tournaments, majors or otherwise, the PGA tour has lost all credibility. Why not make all 7 Signature events majors—they have left the rest of season looking like Korn Ferry events.
Instead of yapping about another major, get all sides talking, resolve the differences and get ALL the best players competing against each other on a regular tour schedule—–LIKE THE GOOD OLD DAYS BEFORE THE $$$$$ RUINED OUR GAME.
Why would adding a 5th major be bad? Nobody has given a logical explanation why not. And if you did add it as a 5th would it be retro to all past TPC winners or only from that point forward? Just think if it was retro Jack would be at 21 majors and Tiger at 17, even Trevino goes to 7. I'm all for adding a 5th so I agree with Hal Sutton and Lee Trevino.
If they wanna make it a major than they need to open it up to THE BEST. Bryson, Brooks, Rahm, Mickelson and a few other LIV players need to be invited to make this a serious event.
Ben Hogan 99 Apex were in the bag.
I had an old guy caddy for me once down in South Carolina in the late 1990s, probably around 97 at what was then a Nike tour event, now known as the Korn Ferry tour, he was a semi retired caddy that had caddied for Jim Colbert, Willie Buster Miller was his name, After he told me he had caddied on the PGA tour for 25 years or better, I asked him, who was the best player out there in your opinion, i said, Jack Nicklaus? He replied, the best player or the best ball striker, I said how about the best ball striker, he said Hal Sutton, hands-down.
It's mostly former winners of the Players who think it should be a major.
It is better to be the best of the nonmajors than by far the worst of the majors.
