The world No.2 is four-under par for the final round courtesy of three birdies and an eagle to be ahead of American J.J. Spaun at -12, but McIlroy is currently experiencing a nervous wait in the clubhouse with playing being suspended at 4.15am AEDT.

Tournament officials expect the weather to clear and play to resume later in the afternoon in Florida with a thrilling finish on the cards as ten players sit within four shots of McIlroy.

Spaun is the nearest threat, having used the rules creatively to help him make birdie at the ninth hole and make up some ground after dropping two shots on the front nine.

The 34-year-old, who is chasing his second PGA Tour victory, got relief from the rough because he was standing on a sprinkler head, then took his drop onto another sprinkler head to get relief from that, and end up on the fairway.

Sitting two shots back from McIlroy are American trio Tom Hoge, Akshay Bhatia and Danny Walker.

Hoge has shot the equal low round of the day at present with a six-under par effort with one hole left to play, while Bhatia and Walker both have six holes remaining so they possess ample time to make up ground.

The strong winds that played havoc with the PGA Tour’s finest players on Sunday morning Australian time are expected to remain and they could throw up a curveball at anytime during the famous finishing holes surrounded by water.

Extending the tournament to a Monday finish, US time, is also a possibility if the weather does not clear. That was the case when Cameron Smith won the lucrative $40 million event in 2022 but the Australians have not fared as well this year.

Min Woo Lee’s weekend downward spiral continued, following up his six-over par third round nightmare by being two-over par for the day with three holes to play.

He sits in a tie for 29th at -3 after leading the tournament at the halfway mark.

The highlight of the day so far undeniably belongs to US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley who made a hole-in-one at the par 3 13th.

Bradley used a seven-iron on the 153-yard hole to make his second ace for the season, and the fourth of his career.
