There was excitement at Glenart College recently when the Arklow school welcomed coaches from Golf Ireland for a ‘Girls Get Into Golf’ initiative.
Aimed at encouraging girls to engage with the skills of the sport, while promoting teamwork and fun, the event was an overwhelming success, with 28 girls taking part, including representatives from both Arklow Golf Club and Woodenbridge Golf Club.
Tieing in with the Local Sports Partnerships ‘Women in Sport week’ the following week, the girls took part in putting and chipping activities supported by staff from Golf Ireland.
Praising the students for throwing themselves into the event, teacher Richard McDonald said that the motivation for the school’s inaugural girls’ golf day was to encourage more ladies to take up the sport and “remove as many barriers as we can”.
“On the day we had 28 girls taking part in activities with the incredible support of Golf Ireland coaches Neil and Aaron,” he said.
“The girls were also introduced to two local clubs (Arklow GC and Woodenbridge) which have opened the pathway for the girls to become members and take part either competitively or socially in their activities.
“The day was a massive success and we have another date booked for March 26, when we will visit Arklow Golf Club to see how our skills work on the course.
“Thanks to Golf Ireland, Arklow and Woodenbridge Golf Clubs and Active Wicklow for their support on the day.”
