Rory McIlroy was mercilessly mocked by a rival TGL team after missing a short putt as his Boston Common team was beaten by New York Golf Club on Monday night.
McIlroy, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley were beaten 10-6 by the New York team of Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler and Cameron Young in the revolutionary new format.
With the score tied at 0-0, McIlroy missed a short putt and New York’s social media team did not miss the chance to remind the Northern Irishman of another time his putter deceived him.
‘Didn’t know we were playing Pinehurst…’ the team wrote alongside a clip of the putt.
It was a brutal reference to the 2024 US Open, when McIlroy’s hopes of a fifth major title were undone by two botched putts.
In North Carolina in June, McIlroy led the field by two shots with only five holes to play. He then missed twice from inside four feet – on the 16th and 18th.

Bogeys on three of the last four holes ultimately allowed Bryson DeChambeau to steal a remarkable win.
McIlroy rushed away from Pinehurst without speaking to the media after extending his decade-long wait for a fifth major.
The North Irishman’s tally still remains at four and on Monday night his Ballfrogs were eliminated from playoff contention.
McIlroy fronted TGL alongside Tiger Woods. His team failed to win a single match but the Northern Irishman insisted: ‘It’s been a lot of fun.’
He said: ‘I’ve been a part of this from when it was just an idea and to see it come to life this year and see the reception to it, that’s been really cool and something I’m very proud of.’
