David Puig has already won the IRS Prima Malaysian Open and International Series Singapore this year.
American golfer and Hong Kong Open champion Patrick Reed eagerly anticipated his return to the Fanling Golf Course as the LIV Golf tournament will tee off in the city on Friday.
Reed, who secured his tenth professional victory in the city and shot his first-ever 59 on the same course, expressed his excitement.
“I can’t wait to come back to a place where I got my tenth win and also the same time to shoot my first 59, so [Hong Kong] holds a lot of meaning for me,” Reed said.
The 34-year-old highlighted the key difference between LIV Golf and traditional tournaments, describing the 54-hole format as “a sprint.”
“In a 72-hole tournament, even if you have an average day, you can still come out on top,” Reed said.
“But in this 54-hole format, you have to be solid from start to finish.”
Reed, who recently made a hole-in-one on the 12th hole during the first round of the tournament’s Adelaide event in Australia, finished tied for 37th after three rounds.
He will team up with two American and one Belgian teammate as part of the 52-player field, divided into 13 teams, competing for both individual and team honors.
Meanwhile, young talents like Spain’s David Puig, 20-year-old American Caleb Surratt, and Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin are aiming to make their mark.
Puig, 23, who has already won the IRS Prima Malaysian Open and International Series Singapore this year, is eager to improve on last year’s performance.
“I played in Hong Kong twice and didn’t do well last year, but the course is in great condition. It would be awesome to win here,” Puig said.
“I’ll try to hit as many fairways as I can and make a lot of birdies.”
