If you want to become a precision ball striker, pick a Target yardage and try and hit 3-6 different clubs to the yardage.
– We’ll pick 145 yards for example and we’re going to try to hit our 8, 7, 6, & 5 irons to that yardage
– With the 8 iron is pretty much a stock shot
– With a 7 iron, we don’t have to manipulate too much. We can move the ball forward in our stance just a little to get a higher launch angle, choke down the grip a couple inches and make your regular swing.
– With a 6 iron, we’re going to have to change a little more. Again we’re going to move the ball forward to create a higher launch angle, we’re going to choke down on our grip, but we’re only going to make a 3/4 swing. Now the mistake here is to make a soft swing or worse decelerate coming into the ball. What we really want to do is make an aggressive swing through the ball.
– With the 5 iron, we’re going to change our set-up even more. We’re going to move the ball forward, we’re going to choke down, but we’re going to open our stance a little to our target and when we swing through the ball, we’re going to slightly cut across it, giving it a little bit of a fade spin.
This is a fun game you can play on your own or with a friend. Pick a target yardage and choose a club you wouldn’t normally hit with and see who gets closest.
