You struggle to hit fairway woods off the ground because your ball position is too far forward and you are trying to hit up on the ball like a driver.
In this golf lesson, PGA Pro Kerrod Gray and Tyrone Renggli (@tprgolfacademy) explain that the best way to hit fairway woods is by moving the ball slightly back and aligning it with your left armpit at address. This helps ensure the club meets the ball before the lowest point of the swing arc, preventing thin or topped shots.

My shoulders are wide for my height and compared to my hip width. When I stand in a comfortable athletic stance, my lead arm pit is above the inside of my lead foot. How should that inform ball position in my setup?
Excellent explanation, taking left armpit as reference of lowest point of swing. Thanks
Perfect timing, really been struggling with my 3 wood!
This was one of the best fairway wood tutorial videos I've ever watched. Very well thought out and explained in such a way it was easy to comprehend. Can't wait to try this out. Sounds very similar to my approach to my irons. Thank you.
I hit the ball pretty good but was guilty of topping my fairway woods off the deck 50% of the time. Just recently I discovered that takeaway move where you cock your wrists early and I keep the club head just outside my hands. (I always thought was a big no no, club head outside hands.) But lo and behold I can now consistently crush my 5 wood of the deck. For some reason by pushing down and cocking my wrists early in my backswing, it makes it so much easier to transition properly and connect properly when hitting the fairway woods from the deck. I naturally draw the ball so have been working on what ya man here eluded to in your previous vid about cocking wrists early helps someone like me, who gets to inside early to keep me on the right path going back. Itβs a real game breaker for me with hitting woods from the deck. Long story short..π As long as you are turning correctly, not swaying etc, cocking wrists from the get go, club face slightly out from hands and up, then proceed to turn to top of swing, it just feels so easy to strike woods from the deck this way! ( it actually helps all my irons as well) * breathes π cheers mate, sorry for babbling!!
