Are your golf club distances all over the place? Struggling to know exactly how far you hit each club? In this video, I’ll take you through a proper gapping session—so you can dial in your distances and make better decisions on the course.
🔹Why gapping is essential
🔹 How to measure your distances accurately (launch monitor, rangefinder, and the right ball!)
🔹 The key numbers you NEED to track: carry, swing speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin rates & more
🔹 Understanding strike, swing speed, and environmental factors like wind & temperature
🔹 What a good gapping chart looks like & how to use it
By the end of this video, you’ll know how to get precise club distances, avoid costly mis-clubs, and shoot lower scores!

So refreshing to see a video that isn’t “This HCP should hit the ball X yards with this club” (although the title will wind some people up 😂).
I know with strokes gained data there is probably an average carry distance per club for a given handicap, but it’s completely useless to most people as it doesn’t cater for their individual swings and physical capabilities.
Great video on how people should actually gather their data, rather than adhere to “this is the standard you should be at”.
Excellent and very informative review, gapping sessions to ascertain precisely how far you carry each club are invaluable to all golfers but the vast majority of mid-high handicappers have no idea how far they hit all their clubs, the recent advancements in launch monitor technology have made gapping sessions much more beneficial but I notice that you conveniently refrained from mentioning that any golfer looking to purchase their own GC Quad or Trackman wouldn't get much change back out of £25k.
It would be good for pros to offer a 4-6 week gapping session package. Give you a report you can access via an app or something. Then like an MOT book it in yearly. Especially in winter in UK when getting out to play is hard.
Far reaches of Nova Scotia here…..and all I have to do is wonder out to my garage to do my gapping wonderful time we’re in if you think about it
Coming a bit over the top still 😮
Actually, hitting a ball in a field is by far the most accurate.
As long as you can use your real ball, get someone to spot your landing point and use a laser from there back to your hitting spot. It’s dead accurate.
It just harder to do, waiting for near windless conditions etc.
A studio is far simpler and easier, but you are relying on various assumptions made by the software and the different interactions between club and match v grass.
I'm watching from Nova Scotia. I feel seen!
Great info. What’s your felling about using Arccos system?
Watching from Antarctica. Our club pro is an emperor penguin… he still has a GC quad in his igloo pro shop. 😅
Second hand Garmin r10 (There are loads) with RCT balls and a 70 euro Aliexpress net and matt will get you here, for the price of a new driver.
Watching from Lone Tree, Colorado!
SkyTrak plus is very accurate and affordable. It has completely changed my game.
Tip: tp5 pix make it even more accurate.
jez, big fan club up in N.S. My problem is I'm not consistent enough to gap my clubs. Instead of gaps I have canyons, on any given shot the carry distance is plus or minus 20 yards. example: my "go to" club is a nine wood; depending on lie and planned carry I can hit it 130/170.
Excellent video – clear, concise, and meaningful explanation. Thank you! I would add one more thing – don't even remotely bother with trying to do this at one of the new, high-tech (?) outdoor driving ranges such as TopTracer using 200 year old range balls…
Activate windows for Pete's sake! 😆 And fix that wall! 😄
Hello from Colorado Springs, CO where air is scarce, but the ball flies 10% further so it is worth it.
From Nova Scotia. Was on Trackman yesterday. Haha
Sir Peter finch I just want to say thank you myself and my friend started our own golf channel and you’ve been a blueprint in how to create good content 🙌🏼👊🏼
Definitely not from Nova Scotia, but would love to play a round with you when you come to San Diego. The absolute best course out here is Rams Hill, but I'd be alright playing somewhere else.
I go to the course when its empty, start at the 200 yd mark, hit 5 balls every 12 yds, jot it down on a pad. no need for a $5K launch monitor or paying someone big bucks – old school
Thank you for the video. It was explained very well. I was just ready to start gapping my clubs.
Great video. Much prefer the golf nerd Peter Finch than the "blue steel look" hold the finish for 5 seconds one.
Watching from Denver, where it is a perfect 64 degree golfing day on March 1. Great video as always.
I heard recently that for 150 yards and in, the carry is determined mostly by launch angle and ball speed. Spin has very little effect. This would suggest that for gapping 150 yards and in, something like the cheaper PRGR is suitable. 150 is my 7 iron (traditional lofts), so this approach is how I plan on gapping the lower scoring end of my bag this year including choked, 3/4, and 1/2 shots. Good points about the temperature though. I'll have to note that when I do the gapping and then come up with some sort of adjustment factor.
ive been working on gapping lately and making my own chart. ive been hitting off a mat at the range. hitting 3 balls at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full swings. marking down the carry distance and averaging them out using my range finder, its not ideal but using a sim does have a high cost. I have noticed an increase in greens in reg and proximity to the pin on my approach shots. defiantly want to do a session on wedges and another on irons to get more accurate distances.
great video, hopefully i can drop a few more shots after a good sim session.
Watching from Boulder, Colorado … my home elevation is 5,200 feet … and the ball flies magnificently.
GC Quad thinks 80F is ‘Cool’. Here in Scotland we call that ‘HOT’😂
Watching from Colorado. You should get out here to play some of the mountain courses. Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction is incredible.
