Like so much, it's very individual specific, at least with most amateurs. I know young/strong guys that bomb it with reg flex, and old guys that hit it just as far & straight with stiff flex. Get a proper fitting and use whatever works for YOU.
I use Regular and Senior flex through the bag. It's to the point where I'm not sure which ones are which. They produce the shots I want. So, all good!
I used a senior shaft went to X stiff shaft never looked back straighter with the X stiff much better lost a few yards but definitely recommend this
At 55, I don't swing as fast and as hard as I used to however, when I tried a regular flex, I didn't like the feel. Great advice, use what you are comfortable with.
Easy answer. Use what your fitter puts you in
I’m 50 and a 4HC. Drive the ball 250ish carry and hit most fairways with regular flex. My irons are Wilson CB 3-PW with Mitsubishi Tensei AV Silver 55 A flex…yep, “senior” flex. I like the feel and it makes me swing smoother and not so aggressive. I play a 115 gram DG wedge shaft in my 54 wedge, don’t take full swings, like the weight and flex for 70 yards and in.
10 years ago I didn’t get along with driver and used a Mizuno MPH5 1 iron off the tee with senior flex shaft…230 straight with good roll out…can’t hit it that far anymore, hence I figured out the driver!
Moral of the story, play whatever feels good and yields the best results.
Hi, I had an iron set and cavity muscle and have been using true temper shaft black 90. The iron set is snake eyes 675c and still looks good. But my distance seems stagnant. By changing to heavier shaft, will it makes any difference ?
100% true….what works for you.
I saw in person at the PGA show this year the long drivers shafts…..omg were they whippy.
I used to crush the ball but never was at an X-stiff speed. What I have found to be true is that if you sing too fast a flexier shaft will never allow you to get through the ball enough. Put a regular shaft in my hands and it's a fade/slice every time. Stiff corrects that. But anyone under 95-97 swing speed with a driver should go to a Regular shaft. They will lose distance with a stiff one even if it feels more comfortable.
But anyone avg. 100iish swing speed should 100% have a stiff shaft.
Never knew a guy with Down syndrome could explain golf so well.
Sum Fitters think that weight of the shaft is more important than the flex for example a 50 g driver shaft versus a 70 GM driver shaft if they are both the same Flex they will still feel very different because of the lighter weight versus the heavier weight

While I'm not a fitter, from my club testing over the years, its not speed as much as the loading force applied to the shaft and then how that shaft unloads into the ball that determines flex and EI shaft profile. There is a direct correlation to speed and shaft loading but the degree of that influence is golfer dependent. Meaning a golfer at 100mph swing speed can load a shaft more than a golfer at 110mph. Changing the weight of the shaft seems to influence the ball data more than changing flex within the same shaft line. Tip stiffness is generally thought of to control spin but I've found that the reason is due to altering strike location because the more mass you have the further from the hosel the more downward deflection you get which is why a player could see as much as 2 to 3 degrees of lie angle change going from a super game improvement iron to a short blade and moving strike alters the shot patterns and ball data.
You use what you hit well.
Agreed
the overriding factor is used a shaft that you can last 18 holes … if you are tired before the end then lean towards a regular / soft shaft. Swinging in the studio does tell you the whole story.
So many people believe that there is just regular and stiff and that’s it. I play a stiff as I hover just above and around 105mph, but I also have a low kick on my shaft. If you don’t take into account where the kick is, and how that suits you it won’t matter whether it’s regular or stiff or anything else.
Even Long drivers use flexy shafts.
