Golfers have such a hard time knowing the truth about equipment and fall victim to marketing claims. In this video, I’ll teach you how to look past those claims and learn more about how golf clubs ACTUALLY work.

Who am I?

My name is Jon Sherman 👋. I’m a best-selling author, PGA Tour coach, and a golfer just like you. I aim to help golfers of all levels lower their scores and enjoy the game more, but without talking about the golf swing. I focus on four topics – expectation management, strategy, practice, and the mental game. I’ll share some of my best advice on this channel in an easy-to-understand, actionable format.

  1. I’m dubious of the whole fitting process as it is based on a very small sample of shots usually hit on an internal simulator. The only real way to test whether a club is the right one is to use it in ‘real’ and normal conditions over a period of time. The fitter might make recommendations based on their knowledge and experience but unless they follow you around the golf course they don’t really know how you swing. No club maker is going to provide ‘try before you buy sets’.

  2. It is outrageous that your channel doesn’t have 100k subscribers yet. We have to let the people know this is the best golf content on this platform

  3. Really enjoyed this one, Jon! It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that new clubs will fix everything, but this video does a great job of breaking down what actually matters. I’m playing with 10-year-old, second-hand Ping G30s, and while they’re super forgiving, it’s got me thinking more about whether my shafts are really right for me. Love the balanced approach you take—this kind of info is so valuable for beginners like me!

  4. Most important club in your bag is your putter! You might hit your driver 12-14 times in a round, if you are a superior player you will still hit your putter 25 to 30 times in a round.

  5. Hi Jon. Re:Tour Validation. In my opinion Tour Validation is like buying a lottery ticket. We know we stand little or no chance of winning. But we're buying into a dream… that one day we'll hit that shot, or improve on a particular score or perhaps win that club competition. After all, anyone who has played for a while knows there's only one winner…Golf..

  6. Despite everything we are told, fitting is not the magic bullet. Raise your hand if you’ve been fit and the club(s) did not pan out on the golf course. So many variables, which heads, shafts to try in an hour’s worth of swings. It is often what you hit well that day. It’s usually indoors. What works best on the launch monitor is not always best on the golf course. And not all fitters are created equal. On course testing with demo clubs should be the norm but it is usually only an option at private clubs.

  7. truth and honesty in business 🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Being ethical 🤔 your share holders will fire you
Doing a good job, for a reasonable price 🤔 your a socialist and the boss fires you straight away.
Thanks for the honesty, a very rare thing.

  8. I decided at age 60,to treat myself to a custom fitted set of clubs.I went to a well known fitter and we spent an hour trying different clubs and shafts etc, until I found a set I liked.I was measured up and a few weeks later collected the set, which cost best part of £1k.
They recommended a flexible shaft, which according to their computer gave me a good 10/12 yards more per club.
What I found was that the ball did travel further but lacked feel around the greens.
So I was hitting one club less for approach shots and par 3's,but my chipping and pitch shots were leaving me too far from the flag to reduce my scores.
I practiced with them to no avail, and eventually used my old set again and found that my scores were actually lower.
Distance is not the only factor when choosing clubs.

  9. Physical fitting pays off! According to static measurements my Ping’s should be 1/4 longer than standard and 2 degrees upright (Green dot). Active fitting and I’m standard length and 1 degree upright (Blue dot)! Also I’d never dismiss a club purely on looks or sound!

  10. $$ tip, go to a big box golf store that has a trackman, hit a few sets of clubs to find ones that might work for you. A good fitter will get you the right shaft length, lie angle, and flex. You probably don't need exotic shafts and depleted uranium heads, the maximum smash factor is the maximum smash factor, they can't exceed that. If you were to do the Pepsi challenge and hit some irons such as old Ping Zing and the new Ping 440s, there is not a huge difference. I change clubs now about as often as I change cars, about every 8 – 10 years.

  11. A good fitting builds your confidence, not your ego. A ball fitting is super important. Putter fittings are also important and should and be done.

  12. Buying new equipment is fun, but the only way to lower scores for normal people is to practice more.

  13. Thanks Jon! An absolute master class on everything you need to know about club fitting! Appreciate your great content!

  14. As a former professional tennis player with a very high level of sustained success, I can pretty much tell you that, for the amateur player, equipment is essentially irrelevant. I’ve been a 10 at my best. Do you know what that means? 75% of the time, I was making poor impact. So a competent golfer cannot take advantage of the nuances of clubs and fitting. Your 30-40 yards of lost driver distance is complete bs.

  15. Just stumbled across this video and after about 5 minutes I went and subscribed to your podcast on Spotify. Been listening to Tom Davies Ask a Club Fitter podcast, can’t wait to listen to yours!!! 🎉😂

  16. Jon, really enjoyed this video. Lot’s of good info. Keep up the excellent work. The more knowledgeable we are the better our club fit and outcome. Finding a good to best club fitter is the most difficult part of club fitting. Cheers.

  17. I know several people who spent large sums of money on custom fitting, but their scores never got better. In some cases, it got worse. I'm sure there are some recreational golfers that have benefitted from a fitting. However, my observation is without a solid repeatable swing I feel a fitting is really a waste of money. If you hit your driver or irons all over the clubface a fitting won't help you.

  18. This is great stuff and bang on. I would warn against getting obsessive and tinkering too much. At some point you just have to hit golf shots with what you've got. It can be a rabbit hole of despair if you constantly blame/mistrust your equipment.

Irons: is your north south decent. If yes move on
Driver: look at spin, launch and dispersion. At higher levels you'll want to eliminate one side but much of that can be done with the sleeves.
Wedges: they're so fn expensive. Keep old ones for practice at the range to keep gamers fresh

Understand, but don't overthink. Great stuff Jon 👍
