Tom's ideas are wildly 'Utopian', and simply unrealistic. These conferences are big enough (and still growing now) that simply adding more conference games will create more compelling regular season games for TV. I'd prefer the Playoff NOT be diluted with rematches of non-conference games.
Acc being 14 – 31 in bowl games in the last 5 years and 20 – 25 against the Big 12 since 2010 so Bud Elliot can go Kendrick and say "They not like us"
There are only 20 teams since the BCS when we finally agreed on one National Championship, 20 programs have appeared in the game there are 8 current SEC teams, 6 B1G, 4 ACC, 1 B12, and 1 Independent.
… but if we go Pre 2024 expansion, 6 SEC, 4 ACC, 3 B1G, 3 PAC, 3 B12. ACC definitely deserves another spot, If they are actually trying to make a sustainable playoff system for decades to come, (like they should instead of just next few years) then they should realize parody naturally displaces to the other power conferences over time if they are given equal access like the BCS and 4 At-Large playoffs were.
This is 100% to kill the power status of the ACC and B12 programs. This is to kill the sport, it will lose interest and the passion not to lose when 5 SEC keep playing each other 3 times in the season as well
Bud has been in denial about how devalued the regular season has become with the expanded playoff. Glad to see people starting to wake up and realize whats happened to what made the sport so great in the first place.
If the 14 team playoff was in effect this year, you would be adding Alabama and Iowa State (if you don't factor in the Big 12 title game). With first rounders of Texas vs Iowa State, Ohio State vs Bama (winners play each other in ATL), Tennessee vs SMU (winner plays UGA in NOLA), Penn St vs Clemson, Notre Dame vs Arizona St (Winners play in Arizona), and Indiana vs Boise (winner plays Oregon in Pasadena).
Dan Wetzel brought this up on his pod: if conferences are guaranteed bids based on conference standings, then what is the point of scheduling a tough non conference slate when your performance in conference is all that matters. You could also have a scenario where a team goes 0-3 or 1-2 in non-conference and 7-2 in conference, meaning a 7 or 8 win team is in the playoff. If you want noncon to matter, CFP rankings have to determine bids in 14+ team playoff
There is basically no one I trust more to tell me who will win or cover a spread in CFB than Bud, but the expanded playoff and format opinions just make me sad
Take a team like Iowa State for example…. After Conference Championship weekend they were the #2 ranked Big12 team based on conference standings, but in the CFP Rankings they were the #3 ranked Big12 team. What governs who gets those two bids?
DEAD LEG
It is just a bunch of bullies ( big ten and sec) doing whatever they want. Just break off and be done with it.
It solves no problems…it just creates more…
Playoffs should start at the beginning of the regular season. Each team plays 12 games. The best teams in each conference compete in an extra game. The winners of those conference games are judged and the two best play for a national title. Anyone have an issue with that? Oh wait…
I don't know how often you guys actually read the comments, but could you guys talk about Greg Sharpe on the next pod? He passed away of pancreatic cancer on Friday, and you guys recently talked about radio announcers, and I genuinely cant think of a better one. A large chunk of the NU fanbase syncs the TV broadcast with the radio because of him. I have never known Nebraska being good. The Johnny Rodgers return, the triplets and the go for 2 in Miami in 84, the botched block in the back away from the first modern 3 peat (sorry Bud+Danny), Nuking Florida & Tennessee from orbit in Nattys, all in the distant past before I was born. But through all the absolutely terrible football I have watched Nebraska play in my life, Sharpe has been with me through it all. I would just like him to get some coverage. He meant alot to the Nebraska fanbase.
I've listened to the Cover 3 since the Barton days – and this is the first time I've ever been compelled to comment. Having Norlander on not only dovetailed nicely with the Gator disrespect pervasive here (the Free Shoes University bias is strong despite the plethora of Gators who work at HQ), but watching this episode also excited me in an odd way – it kinda felt like watching my wife makeout with one of my favorite ex-girlfriends. Norlander knows his shit – and there's no one better than the C3 crew when talking about Saturdays in the Fall. Great job on this episode – whomever came up with this idea deserves a raise.
Love seeing Matt come over. Next we need GP to find time in his busy schedule to come on so Bud can blow his mind. Now that may need a whole hour segment
Good show. Thank you for the episode. I love "With the first pick" and "Eye on College Basketball".
Imagine a dynamic, UEFA coefficient style system to rank the conference, so a conference’s out of conference games, bowl performance, playoff performance, and some other factors determine how many auto bids a league gets each year. The number would be set in stone from the previous season’s performance so everyone knows what they need to do to make the CFP every year. Alternatively, make the system lock in at week 10, so then the system can take the current season’s conference hierarchy into account while giving teams enough time to know what they need to do to get in.
