I love the videos lately. Where is the video of you finding out and playing with the set your wife bought for you for Christmas?
I bought a set of gen 4 0311p off ebay and it was a bit of a gamble since theres like 4 videos total about them, but they are way better than I was hoping for so far. Cant wait for winter to end in Wisconsin and get to actually play them. They were the same price as a new set of takomo 101t and frankly I thought pxg irons would be better. You should do a video on the gen 4s since theres basically nothing out there and I think they are very good for their current price
Great video James and the irons still look good
I bought a set of Titleist 712 cb:s last year just under 300 – with new grips. Fair shape. I really like them, though I´m a mid handicapper. I´ve been thinking about to invest in new irons (Titleist) -custom fit and all that jazz, but after this video… I think I´ll stick to my cb:s.
Well I love my Ping Eye 2's, regripped and looking as good as the day my late father bought them.
I agree 100% ridiculous prices for a small improvement.
James, james james. I could buy a cheap car {it gets me there!} but I prefer to buy a real expensive, class one. Golf and cars are my hobby and I’ll buy what I like. “Life’s too short to drink cheap wine!” I play a forged iron and the feeling is unreal. Do they go further than my mates 10 year olds, never cleaned and left in his boot all year round…..maybe 10 yards but “NO!” Every day your dying……think about it!
Totally agree I've recently got a set of jpx919s and srixon zx7s for about 325 each. Think they're more than adequate for me. I can't ever see myself buying anything new. 200 for a wedge, 500 for a wood… madness
I've gamed the same Hogan Apex Blades since the late 90s. Treated myself to some new-to-me $500 Ping G425s 5-PW. Early reaction is that I don't hit them any better, they feel worse, and I don't have the cache' of playing blades anymore. We'll see what spring brings but . . . I may just play the Hogans until I'm done. PW to PW shows VERY little difference (the Hogans were actually slightly better). 7 iron to 7 iron will be where the rubber meets the road.
See I get it – if you are buying off the rack there is zero point in buying the latest models – I would argue that there is more value in spending even more money and get a custom built set that might last much longer .
Just bought the srixon Z565 and Z785 combo set and absolutely love them. Paid £250 for them and they are the best things I’ve hit and I’ve always bought brand new.
Im still using my titleist 735CMs, love them and don't see any need to buy a newer set until these are completely worn
Totally agree.
One thing worth mentioning is that as the face and grooves show signs of wear, there are groove sharpener tools available (very low cost) to help recover some spin. I will say that in my experience these tools don't work very well but others may have had better success.
I picked up a used set of these not too long ago and love them! Way more forgiving than they look. The older Titleist cb’s had a little larger head than the new ones which makes them more appealing to me. They feel very soft as well! Great video!
I’ve got these clubs and was thinking of treating myself to a new set this year…maybe not? 🙈 I’ll never get rid of them
I've had the 716cb on my ebay watch list for weeks and James literally comes out with a video about them…impeccable timing
Bought a set of ping i200 last weekend excellent condition 4_pw £180. Bargains can be found. The cb s do look good James 🏌️
You want value for money on a forged cavity back, check what the Honma tw757vx are going for…. Won’t find a better forged cavity at any price…
not easy to hit a low one when swing plane is so bad
James, can you get ahold of some ProtoConcept irons for a test?
I play 2003 NIKE Sasquatch Irons senior flex. Taylormade 7-9 wood vsteels – PXG Gen5 driver 50gram. I play to a 11-12hcp. I do have a T400 49degree wedge (best club ever made).
I recently bought a set of calaway Paradym irons on eBay for a steal , like new for $250 5-pw.. they fly miles , they are forged and hollow body. They go +20-25 yards further than my CBs. I got a fantastic deal
716 CB's have that pre worn leading edge, old school dci 990 looks, they're forged and full on pro line irons. Also have tungsten in the long to mid irons for higher trajectory, the 620's might have help in the 4 iron only, not sure of the 718's. So these older 716's actually have more tech than the latest CB's, lol! I notice these and other older forged cavity backs, like the Callaway x forged of any year, can be had relatively cheap.
Still play Adams a4 forged when I’m at my place in the USA. Shoot same scores with my Srixon up north.
As far as a Golf Glove- James- Dicks/Golf Galaxy offers for $3 insurance on a golf glove. So I play the premium Titleist Cabretta leather gloves and if there is a tiny tear or anything, ya take it back to Dicks/Golf Galaxy and they replace it for the price of the insurance @ $3!
Ya can’t beat the deal 😁
My first set of irons were the Titliest DCIs. They were a great set of clubs. I only play used clubs and am always hunting for more. I picked up a set of Mizuno mp14s that are my main clubs. Would love a set of those Titliest if I could get a hold of someq
James, I believe these companies are gearing their marketing to the over-65 baby boomer retirees who have plenty of IRA money and required minimum distributions they have to take and dropping $1,000 to $2000 to bring their handicap down by a stroke or increase their distance by 3 yards doesn't phase them. 🤔
I'm actively gaming the King Cobra Forged SS from 2002 here.
I'd still like something new, but from Maltby, Hogan, McGregor (U.S.), Takomo, Sub 70, etc.
The public are paying for all the free clubs that they give to all the professionals and testers around the world, plus all the marketing.
I agree but the only problem is if you’re like me 6’6” and need your clubs longer than standard and more upright than standard, after paying for those adjustments it’s almost a wash
I think the current 620MB are one of the best looking clubs ever, so i just got fitted for a new set as a present to myself for my 40th birthday. Being Afraid that they would change the design for the worse for the next generation… plan to hang on to these for 10 years (played 718 CBs before these)
Titleist are a shoddy gang of pikey criminals.
In conjunction with your desire to provide videos on more affordable clubs, I sure hope you will give a serious look at some (not all) component clubs too. There are some excellent, high-quality, high-performing choices available at very modest prices. Pretty Please….?
100% 👍 only need when worn out
Players irons cb/mb haven't changed much in 20-25 years. Drivers and FW woods are maxed out. The new equipment just produces better results on mishits.
I buy the Kirkland glove, as well. They typical don't last very long but you get 4 for 22.95.
I just purchased a full bag of irons driver hybrids wedges well happy 😊 not had new clubs in 14yrs so my time for a treat
They're not selling performance, they're selling "new and shiny". Drivers are an even bigger joke. R&A and the USGA set the COR limits ages ago. Mfg have been at 460cc forever. Any changes that happen with drivers are produced the tiniest of improvements . Of course there's always new people to the game that need clubs, or perhaps a beginner that is advancing and wants something a bit new and special. But if you're an established golfer with quality equipment, the need to buy new more than once a decade is very minimal except unless you're trying to scratch the "new and shiny itch". And that's perfectly fine as long as it's within your budget and it makes you happy. And doesn't land you in divorce court.
James, I challenge you to use a set of the original Tommy armor 845s irons. They will blow you away for feel for being a cast old iron set. Give them a try!
Got a set of Cobra Fly Z Pro from 5 to 8 iron for about 40$ each brand new, also added a lightly used Ping Blueprint 4 iron and Titleist 716 MB 9 iron for about 35$ each, Cobra Radspeed 3 wood for 50$, and Mizuno T22 wedges for about 140$ for 3 wedges. Only thing i paid a bit extra for was my driver and putter. About 750$ for a full set (and the driver had an upgraded Graphite Design shaft).
