Don’t forget the kick point of the shaft. Low kick point means higher launch.
I had a good think about this video, after having a few frustrating rounds. I decided to leave my regular clubs at home. I took a 3 hybrid, a 9 hybrid [5 iron equivalent], 7 iron, 9 iron, 52 degree PW putter and a really old Allenbrook chipper. I usually shoot 105+ with 'regular' clubs. Just shot 97 for 18 holes. My first sub 100 round in about 15 years. Yhank you for the encouragement to abandon my ego.
Thanks for the good advice!
81 yrs old, Driver, 5 wd, 5, 7 8 hybrid , putter
Dont forget 9 wood
Excellent from 125 to 145
Great info 👍🏻👍🏻
I once went out and golfed nine holes at my local course with just a 7 wood, 7 iron, sand wedge, and putter. I shot the exact same score as when I golf with a full bag.
Just getting back into golf as I've now retired. I've consciously made the decision to practise with nothing higher than a 5 iron and one wedge. The plan is to play a few full rounds with just 6 clubs (5, 7, 9, W, SW, P) in order to strengthen my short game first. Once I'm happy with those (and with hopefully a lower score than I've ever had), I'll start expanding my bag. Thanks a lot for this video; it basically confirms what I thought!
D type '17 m2, TA 845 5w, 3h, 4h, Macgregor tour PCB 4i-P,SW and Macgregor MT 527 GW. my 4 iron is 25 deg loft, 4h is 22. basically the hybrids replaced my 2/3 irons. i miss the irons but the hybrids are more consistent. depending on the round, substitute a big tour cobra 3w tuned down to 13deg for a trusted fade. my D set for straight or draw. the hybrids are my go-to off the tee if i need accuracy and of course easy to hit anywhere. i dropped almost 3 strokes past two years. 14 to 11. my driver shafts are 44.25" which feels much better than standard.
As an older person I only started about 14y ago. When I started I bought 1/2 set Ping G15 even irons (4 6 8 W S) plus a YES! Olivia putter. Later I added a Ping 17-4 G15 wood as my driver and even later for fun a cheap 64 Dunlop Flop Attack iron. And TBH as I play not so regular my balls are not very consistent so still having the 1/2 set makes me very happy.
All those PXG clubs and not a mention….gives a lot of love to Ping and Mazel though. How come?
Love your blogs, sensible advise. I am 59 and play if and when i can but still manage to play of 12 or below on average. Use a G425 driver, 5, 7, 9 wood and 5 hybrid for the rough. 7 iron down. I have found over the last few years that a pink / purple tee are a great fit for me hitting the fair ways with a draw and getting 265 yard on ave with a 12 deg driver. But like most want to try a 10.5 deg for those extra yards. At the end of the day as many on here are saying enjoyment and fresh air are the key for me.
Great video . At 56 yrs. old , I'm getting excited about golf in retirement. The last 5 yrs. I've only played avg. 2 rounds a year. I just bought Ping G730 irons w/ graphite shafts , for my older yrs and joints . I ordered a 12 degree Callaway Paradym and getting it 3/4inch cut off . I have an old firesole 5w that is my straightest and easiest to hit . I'm taking the 3w out of the bag . And I also have a heavenwood 7w . The irons are strong by at least a club and a half . So , I have 50 ,55 and 60 degree Ping glide 3.0 wedges . My goal is a much improved fairways hit . Giving me a better chance at greens in regulation. Wish me luck . A few lessons this winter are in the works as well .
Are you sure you've got that CG thing the right way round. I bought the Taylormade SLDR driver and their big claim was CG forward which created more loft. You could be right of course, but im confused now 😂
I'm 66 and till last year, hadn't played for 20 years. I got a fitting from a dedicated Titleist fitter. Driver 11 degrees at 11.75 and 44.5". Next club effectively a 5 wood. 16.5 degree at 18 degrees at 42.5". Weights on both adjusted for changes from standard lengths. What a difference. Leave you past game and ego at home.
Yes! 54⁰ mafia
Thanks!
I’m the anomaly here. I’m 66, mid handicapper with a very steep swing, and I’ve ditched all my woods. I have zero problem getting the ball in the air and if I could put worth a darn, I could easily take 20 strokes off my game. I hit long irons extremely well and almost always out drive my playing partners. I my longest club is an older counterfeit Big Bertha 2i that is labeled Big Brother. The rest of my clubs from 3i through LW are Callaway Fusion Wide Soles from 2007 that I inherited. Callaway also made a marching 2i but they weren’t part of the regular set and my chances of ever finding one diminish every day. I finally purchased a second 3 iron that I’m going to strengthen 2-3 degrees to match the 2 iron that I don’t have. I don’t know if that will be a better club than the bootleg Big Brother 2 iron but it will be fun to see.
I love hearing what’s in everyone’s bag and will definitely try walking with a 7 club setup when the snow is gone in the DC area. I’ve always played high lofted wedges around the green instead of having a dedicated chipper but I do have one and I’m encouraged to try. Luv this channel!!!
This varies for each golfer I gave up Long Irons.
But prefer 6 7 8 9 Irons because the greens I play on need a high ball with maximum backspin.
Grafite except for my lobby
I work out build muscle and work on flexibility.
Thats as important as having clubs you can trust.
I have 1 3 5 woods getting a 7 soon.
The modern technology 1 's 3's 5's are so much better than the clunker's i started with 55 yrs ago.
I have had one of these chipper they have a wide heal and get caught on the grass.
Putters are an individual choice keep trying until you find the right one.
Great advice Andy. I was a 4 h’cap in my 30’s. Now 12 and I’m 80, I’ve played many a round with 5 Hybrid, 7 + 9 iron, 52 wedge and putter, breaking 80 quite frequently. Recently changed my shafts to 35oz and this given me more control of my trajectory.
Went with Lazrus hybrid irons all the way down to the 50 degree. Love them and so easy to hit.
I have a practice bag that I use for 9 hole loops. It has a D, 4h, 6i, 9i, 54deg and putter. Easy to carry but I typically score a couple shots more than a full bag. BTW, just got a LAB DF3 and love it.
I sometimes jokenly wonder if the USGA will ban hybrids because the make golf easier😂.
Love the channel. Love the content. In particular I love the evolution of the content over the years. I've been a subscriber for a long time. The last few rounds I played were with no 3 wood, no driver. 7 wood only off the tee. Longer approaches yes, but not higher scores. In fact I scored lower – on one 9 that I regularly play, a par 35, I average 40. I keep stats. I shot a 36 with only the 7w off the tee. I stayed in play. I picked up a demo 7 wood because after building a home golf simulator I thought I had destroyed my long club swing – Driver, 3 Wood, 3 Hybrid. Turns out it had to do with playing/practicing indoors. I don't know why. (outside I was fine I learned later) After getting the 7 wood I could not believe how consistent and confident I was with it.
7 wood is a cheat mode club. 6 hybrid is along those lines as well.
Two schools of thought when it comes to chipping. 1) Use one club. 2) Use multiple clubs with the same stroke. I subscribe to the later, chipping with LW – 9i.
I can't recommend Dan Grieve highly enough as a chipping teacher/guru BTW. I had chipping yips for years. Now I am a good chipper and only practice before rounds. I'm probably as good as or slightly better than years ago, when I practiced several hours each week with poor technique. Dan has better technique than many pros IMO, they just practice a lot to make it work.
2025 Goal 1: Get comfortable with the driver. I will use a shorter shaft. Great idea.
I’m just taking up golf again after 17 years and the gear these days gives me confidence that I can get back into golf and enjoy it . I really enjoy your clips and insights . Hi from Australia
I play ambidextrous, I can easily switch from left to right and back while on the course. I am equally bad on either side! With these club thoughts, I will try a Sunday bag of left one day, and a Sunday bag right the next. Just for the fun of it. Golf is fun, and meant to be a fun challenge. I won’t win trophies, but I can have a lot of fun playing. (Too old for basketball anymore!)
7 and 9 woods are my final pieces of my golfbag jigsaw. I just need to find the right clubs.(Cobra)
Driver, 3, 5, 7, 9, putter
Hybrids equal quitting or hospice.
13.5 driver for me
I've had my 12 deg driver cut down to about 3W length for quite a few years, find it much easier (especially vs my 1980s driver — Taylor Made Burner with about 9.5 deg of loft!). Not aiming to hit it anymore like I used to — happy to keep it straight and a little less distance. And yes, can definitely do well with well under 14 clubs in the bag — we used to play a 3-club comp and it was quite entertaining, let alone not needing to think as much about the choice of shots! Definitely good for thinking outside the box / finding flexible ways to get the ball onto the green.
5 hybrid, 9 iron, putter
I call my 30 degree hybrid a game changer.
