If you replaced Richard with Steve Perry then I bet 90% of the criticism would be replaced with something like “THAT’S how a rock legend sings the national anthem “, but bc people don’t know Richard’s singing style, it doesn’t sound right to them. I don’t blame anyone, I think that if I didn’t follow him for the past year then I wouldn’t have known what to think of this performance. I did follow him though, and I loved it!

I love him! I think he has a beautiful and powerful voice but… I was really disappointed in the way he sang the anthem. It made me cringe.

Lord, have mercy. He sure did mess that up BIG time. What a disgrace to our country's beautiful Anthem and Flag. People should not be allowed to alter that beautiful song. Very, very few can sing that song correctly and with honor these days, so it seems. So very sad that our country's sorry leaders allow our National Anthem to be altered.
Sad this man is getting so much notoriety. He has been given a false sense of his talent!

Recently AGT celebrities on the show along with the viewing audience who votes are tending to support the underdogs that have a good background story rather than those that are most talented. Hence, when such winners perform in the real world, the audiences are often disappointed. That’s why I have stopped watching AGT.
This guy can sing. He just needs to practice more. When I first saw him on AGT. He sang the hardest song and gave it justice. I actually like this guy. Not too much people can belt when they sing and his high notes are gorgeous! In time, he is gonna get much better. He is still new….relax. How many people can say they won the title on AGT and a million dollars?

I think Richard did the Star Spangled Banner better than most other big names. He emphasized the REAL story of the song.
Fergie did better than this…

I believe that Richard has a good singing voice. I rooted for him the whole time on AGT. He just needs to get with a voice trainer to help him with his pitch but he can clearly sing and he sings with passion. People can be so mean and nasty with the negative comments. If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all is my motto

The best singing ever of the national anthem that I have heard in quite a while happens to be none other than Chris Stapleton. I know a lot of people don’t like him, but he did an amazing job on the national anthem.

He has a head that looks like he should be skinny. And when he got loud near the end, that was torture
Here’s my take and I sing and play piano. You couldn’t pay me a million to sing the national anthem for a crowd that size with accompaniment, let alone acapella. That is a hard song. No it wasn’t perfect, no it wasn’t close to the best, but it was better than a lot I’ve heard, and there were cheers in the audience, not boos. So imma shut up and show respect. Unless you’d like to go do that and know you’ll do better you should consider doing the same instead of spewing vitriol on here.
Singing the national anthem is the hardest song to sing in my opinion. It has so much significance and you definitely don't want to mess it up.
That was a terrible rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Yikes! That was NOT good.
