JR recalls Gorilla Monsoon’s dislike of Randy Savage

  1. I have never been a fan of the 3 announcer config that WCW always did and AEW still continues to do. Or bringing in a guest commentator, esp when they don't know anything about wrestling. I just watched KOTR94 recently on WWE network when they were showing all the KOTR leading up to the 2024 KOTR, and the main event of Rowdy Piper vs Jerry the king was a pretty good match. Jerry kept picking on that skinny Roddy Piper fan.. also the year Owen won KOTR with the help of Jim the Anvil. The new generation era of WWF was horrible, but there are some hidden gem matches and feuds during that era.

  2. I don't quite understand the motivation behind most of these segments.
Is it to partially negate or downplay the overall career of an all-time legend because of his controvetsial nature & even more controversial abrupt & unceremonious WWE departure?
Is this their way of saying they sided with Vince?
How vocal were they then? Ever a word to Savage?
    Doubtful.
Not saying Randy was an angel or perfect by any stretch, But enough – we get it, not everybody liked him.
No need to keep piling it on this many years after the man's dead & has no platform or vehicle to defend his position.
Randy wanted to be in the ring, & Vince – prematurely – put him out to pasture in broadcasting/announcing. There was friction about it.
    So, realistically:
How good could you possibly have expected it to be?

  3. If anyone wants to see Monsoon really annoyed watch Backlund vs Shango from Raw ‘93 I think. It was one of , if not the last appearance of Rob Bartlett who was god awful. But on this day Bartlett imitated McMahon and it was actually pretty funny. Monsoon was so annoyed by it.

  4. "you're a has been two… just like Sammartino!", Savage yelling at Monsoon. Gorilla wasn't having any of it. Savage bullied and intimidated every "baby face" commentator… except Monsoon. 🙂 Gorilla stood up to him every time. 🙂 It was epic theatre.

  5. Macho Man was not the big problem at that pay per view, Art Donovan as guest announcer was ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS. Macho Man was OK but he just didn't meld well with Gorilla and Gorilla mainly disliked Randy for his treatment of Miss Elizabeth back stage but also personality clashes was a bit of it as well. But no matter how bad the commentating was for KotR 94, I'll taket hat over Jerry Lawler's ear destroying squeaks any day, Art's weight questions and all.

  6. My favorite combo of all time and it might be just cuz who I grew up with but was Jesse Ventura and Gorilla Monsoon

  7. Gorilla and Savage would have been just fine but Art dragged the whole show down. It was like he knew NOTHING about WWF or followed, just took it for the check. Horrible announcing commentary, I'm surprised Vince didn't fire anyone.

  8. I remember one of the Wrestlemania's was pretty bad too. I forget which one it was but i remember there was a woman on commentary just saying "WHOAAAA" about 3 dozen times

  9. Randy would have been better served to have stayed in the ring but I guess that Vince felt he was too old, then again, he had Bob Backlund winning the WWF Title at 45 years of age. I'm 45. I think Backlund was about three years older than Randy. Savage should have been able to stay an in ring performer. Always felt they should have done a Bret/Savage program in '94 for the title in a three match series to pass the torch to Bret. I never thought that Randy would ever go to WCW. Wish he had stayed in the WWF and he could have had some great programs with some of the New Generation stars. I do miss this era. I was still in HS. Life was great in '94.

  10. I love Macho Man as a wrestler, but he was a TERRIBLE commentator. In his defense, it wasn't really what he wanted to be doing. What works in promos doesn't necessarily work at the announce table. He tended to be too left field and it never really added anything to what the other commentator(s) were trying to do. They were trying to sell the in-ring talent, Macho was selling Macho, which had always been his job prior to this gig.

  11. Art Donovan was a hoot on David Letterman and late night shows. What a funny guy. Quite the personality plus a good football player. I haven't seen king of the ring with him. I'm not defending him. I'm sure he wasn't right for the job but in general Art Donovan was quite the personality.

  12. Macho, Flair, Hart and Undertaker we"re the most dedicated to the wrestling business than any other. They played themselves on screen and off. Hogan was the biggest. But he was nothing more than an act in the ring. Behind the scenes, he never wanted to do business and he stabbed everybody he could in the back. Fucked Bret Hart out of a "Summer slam" match and title in 92", pretended that "Taker broke his neck, so he could get him buried. And then came to WcW to steal Flairs heat. And subsequently robbed MACHO of an all time run.

  13. The 2 greatest team duo announcers
    Were
Goriila monsoon and jesse the body ventura
    And
Jim ross and jerry the king lawler

  14. jim seems to always be negative to everything macho man …..o,k we got your message ..now jim go bury everyone else biz you knew and yet the guy who was really horrible to you [ vince ] ….you kiss his butt

  15. Monsoon was an old school Italian gentleman. He objected to Randy's abusive treatment of Elizabeth, as well he should have. If Gino had been a little younger Randy may have gotten his ass handed to him by Gorilla.
