Aikido works when your opponent is willing to collaborate with you and let you win. It's like tai chi, it's not a combat art. It's like dancing. You learn a choreography with a willing partner.
I heard about how all this style revolves around not hurting your opponent. I'm not a trained fighter, but in this age where more and more people are formally trained in certain fighting styles, I was genuinely interested to see if it would ACTUALLY be effective against a trained fighter. All I can say is, when almost every video of it is a "demonstration," that's not very encouraging.

For the people who say Aikido doesn’t work, it just simply they don’t know Aikido enough. I saw a couple who tried out Aikido, and the lady successfully flipped her guy while the guy didn’t even know how he was dropped. The guy’s weight is double compared to the lady.
If you actually believe an Aikido "master" can defeat a basic MMA fighter, you're just not very bright.

its not the Art fault… Aiko teach to defense, use and control the Ki. In the Street there is NO RULE, u will find ur art that u had master doesnt work a sh!t… if u wanna fight MMA, learn Multiple Art… thats why it called Mixed Martial Art.. u damn fool.. to me learn Art combo Muay Thai, Judo, Aiki + Bjj will make u lethal W….

I earned a shodan in aikido, I taught and practiced for 10 years. Much of what you see in demonstrations is orchestrated. Is it effective? Yes, it can be but not always effective or practical against a skilled fighter. If you disagree you really don't understand martial arts. It suited me better than judo and tae Kwan do but too much choreography. No hard core fighting skills.
The founder of aikido wanted to develop a "benevolent" style. He modified and altered effective and disabling techniques into kind of a spiritual and esoteric form. It is enjoyable but it does not prepare you for real combat. I know this as fact, I wore a hakami for a long time. Aikido is not a true fighting art.

I don't know what exact techniques are originally from Aikido, for example the kotegaeshi was present in three different dojos I was in, one dojo was karate, other jujitsu, and another one it was Judo, surprisingly all three had kotegaeshi in their libraries.

It would be nice to learn some Aikido moves. It would never be able to beat some forms of Karate. Such as Shoto Kan. If you had any Aikido master go up against such as , Hidetaka Nishiyama. This was my fathers master. Dad needed a training dummy when we moved to Alabama. So at 10, I was introduced to Shoto Kan. I never was belted. To this day I still call myself a white belt. Dad was a black belt. I only spared with black belts after 10 years of training. I only got my ass beat once. A black belt in Jeet Kune Do. I was about half drunk. It hurt but it was the funnest fight I ever had. I will say that if I ever fought Seagull, I probably would have been beat down. I also promise that he would not have gone through a sparing match with me without getting hit. Aikido, has some wonderful moves. I like the joint moves. One thing I do see as so silly is when a fighter gets flipped, you will see feet so close to venerable areas such as head and neck. You flip me and break my wrist, I will bust your head. I am not bragging. At my age now, a 12 year old might beat me half to death!!😁😁😂😂
