  1. The reason we now need gap wedges and golfers can no longer hit long irons is that for years manufacturers have conned buyers by claiming their clubs go longer when really they have just strengthened lofts. The one and only way we will ever see true distances from clubs will be when every club has a loft and not a number or letter on the bottom.

  2. I think it was Lee Trevino who said if he was ever caught in a thunder storm he would wave a 1 iron in the air and not even God can hit a 1 iron. Now we are seeing 3 & 4 irons with the loft of the old 1 iron. That is the reason golfers need hybrids not long irons and the reason who pitching wedges have been Deloitte’s so much we need gap wedges. The truth is lofted clubs now are 3 numbers lower than they used to be before manufacturers started competing with each other as to whose clubs were longer by conning buyers about club numbers and lofts.

  3. I hit it a decent distance. I carry 5 wedges. 62-46 degrees, 4 degrees between each. I put a longer shaft in my 4 iron. I’d rather be dialed in inside 150 than from over 230 yards.

  4. I’m looking at getting my five to pw tuned in soon, and once I’ve got the lofts spread correctly I’ll take it from there

  5. I would really like to see a club maker start a trend by putting two numbers on the sole. E.G. P/46, 8/42, 7/38 etc.

This video is spot on. “Our irons our further”. Oh yeah, that 4 iron is actually a 2 iron and that is why you hit the sweet spot every 6th time you use it.

  6. Excellent advice. Most golf coaches these days will have something like Trackman and they are happy to book a lesson time with you just for the purpose of learning how far you hit each of your clubs. They can also usually help you with adjustments if needed. It a great use of a lesson fee. And … can be done inside during the snowy winter

  7. Would be very interesting to see you bring in a few golfers of varying handicaps and doing a gapping session and the fix with their current bag. Show us all how its done

  8. I won’t have a lob wedge, just 50° and 56°, I will have 4wood 7wood and 5hybrid though. And maybe a 2iron or 3iron for stingers… and 6-PW I will still only end up with 13 clubs in my bag but that is fine… I’m not a big hitter.

  9. My pitching wedge is 42 so i went for the matching gap wedge from the set and then went 52 56 60 due to the gapping. At the top end i dropped my 5 iron out for a 5 hybrid then 7 wood 4 wood and love the set up . I think what the number on the bottom of the club is irrelevant as long as there all doing there job and going specific yardages.

The best thing i ever done was take the 5 iron out the bag and put the hybrid in,its easier to hit more forgiving and much higher ball flight .

  10. All down to companies trying to get more cash out of golfers making stronger lofts then u have to buy yet another over price club..

  11. Great commentary Matt! I happen to have a weird gap between 9 iron and 8 iron (20 yards) Mizuno MP 60. 9 goes 140 and 8 goes 160 for some reason.

  12. My mizuno jpx pw is 42.5 so use the matching GW at 48 then specialist 52 and 58 which provide close enough gaps for me. Fortunately I don't need a 4 and 5 iron which frees up space for a 25 hybrid, 7 wood and 4 wood

  13. I think if you hit your pw 110y a 52 and a 58 will do. Allowing you to add a club at the other end.
