Make the Golf Ball the Moving target – John Hughes Golf

Many golfers have a difficult time taking athletic skills from a sport they excel in to the golf course. The main reason why is the sport you excelled at was a reactionary sport. Not a static sport. Golf, darts, billiards, and other sports start from a dead stop. Making those sports static. Requiring you to react. And sometimes all it takes is imagining the golf ball moving to create the reaction you need to become a better golfer.

Within this video, John Hughes emphasizes the importance of reacting to the golf ball. Asking you to draw parallels to other sports you’ve played where the ball, puck, or other object is the item in motion, not you. John suggests visualizing the ball moving towards your club rather than focusing on the club’s movement. When you’re bogged down with swing thoughts, you get tense and tight and are never ready to react.

John used to use a mental exercise when he played his best. Saying to himself constantly as he addressed the ball and while he swung the club, “100 yards”. When coaching golfers, John asks them to repeat their area code. Saying the 3 numbers in a row can distract a golfer from over thinking about their swing and allow them to react to the cadence of the numbers. It will also allow the golfer to envision the ball actually moving towards them.

Envisioning is the key to making this work for you. And it starts with the golfer standing behind the golf ball, envisioning the shot and the ball’s movement from the target. If you can start there, you can make the ball move as you stand over it.
