Types Of Bets And How To Read The Odds
Since 2010, nine of the last 15 winners of the Phoenix Open ranked fourth or better in Strokes Gained Approach. The key distance stats on Approach play are from 150-175 yards and 175-200, with equal distribution last year. And SG: Tee to Green and Ball Striking are other key stats to add to your model when determing a contender in Phoenix. Last year, Nick Taylor ranked No. 1 in SG: Putting, No. 6 in Tee-to-Green and No. 9 in Approach.
Scheffler, Thomas, Theegala, Simpson, Matsuyama, Spieth, Fowler and Sungjae Im top the field in course history for Strokes Gained, Total, over the last 24 rounds, per stats from Fantasy National. Approach leaders are Thomas, Scheffler, Simpson, Spieth, Fowler. Scheffler won the event in 2023 leading the field in SG: Approach, and then rode a hot putter (No. 2) in winning the Phoenix Open in 2022 despite No. 55 in Approach.
The course conditions will be far firmer and faster than last week’s event at softer Pebble Beach and its Poa annua greens. Less emphasis on putting stats with more flat and true putting surfaces at TPC Scottsdale. Scrambling gained stats are more in play this week as players handle the tougher par 4’s and holes No. 11, 14, 5 and 2.
Scheffler’s ridulously low odds to win (less than 3/1) are due to his status in the game, field strength, event results (2 wins, T3, T7 last 4 years) and superior stats profile at TPC Scottsdale.
Some select sportsbooks will offer betting on the outright champion as the “winner without” market, eliminating Scheffler from the outright winner market. Others players than Scheffler with notable success at the Phoenix Open and multiple top-10 finishes over the last 5 years includeis: Burns, Horschel, Spieth, Taylor, Theegala, Thomas.
Nine of the last 11 winners of the Phoenix Open won either a Major tournament or The Players Championship. That includes Scheffer, who had a stretch of 4 wins in 5 starts in March-April last year on his way to seven PGA Tour titles and Player of the Year honors. Ten of the top-25 players from the Official World Golf Rankings are teeing it up this week, with the top-4 below as major champions. There could be an opportunity for a longer shot breaking through to win “The People’s Open.”
No. 1 Scottie Scheffler
No. 5 Hideki Matsuyama
No. 7 Wyndham Clark
No. 15 Justin Thomas
No. 17 Robert MacIntyre

Changes To 2025 Phoenix Open
Following last year’s weather issues that caused daily delays on the course and muddy, slippery slopes and bottlenecks for spectators, the host Thunderbirds announced several changes for the 2025 event as they look to control the environment at “The Peoples Open” while adhering to the Phoenix Open motto – Respect the game. Respect the players. Respect the fans.
From digital ticketing to an added entrance near the 18th hole, the biggest change to address congestion is the expanded size of course walkways to mitigate logjams, especially near the most popular 16th hole and behind No. 18. More accessible viewing areas and expanded concessions will add to better experience for all spectators, as the Thunderbirds continue their enormous charitable impact in the local community through the Phoenix Open.
The Thunderbirds announced a record $17.5 million raised from the 2024 tournament, in spite of the issues last year. That eclipsed the $14.5 million from the previous year, and $10.5 million in 2022. In the 15 years of Waste Management as title sponsorship, the Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised an impressive $142 million.
Watch each week as the PGA pros fire for more birdies and score with biggest prize pools in the Signature Events plus next month’s The PLAYERS Championship and upcoming four majors. Golf fans also shoot for more fairways and greens in pursuit of profit while watching and wagering on golf.
You can bet on it.
