Every shot from my round at the St. Mellons Golf Club, St. Mellons, between Cardiff and Newport, on 11th September 2024.

I lived in Cardiff for 15 years but had only played two courses nearby during that time, but now with the golf bug biting again and new courses to play, I found myself at St Mellons Golf Club, itching to see what this established parkland course had to offer.

I arrived super early and was the first out, just after 7am. It’s a Henry (Harry) Shapland Colt designed parkland course, dating back to 1937 and its mature nature is in evidence immediately. Lovely fully grown trees are abundant, lining the course and featuring as integral parts of many of the holes but not unfairly so as to impede and block. Each of the holes here has a certain something to it. Some longer par 4’s, some shorter and more tactical, a nice selection of par 3’s and well placed bunkers throughout, waiting to catch errant shots.

Two loops of nine head from the clubhouse in a cloverleaf shape and with easy walking on the undulating fairways, the course offers an undemanding stroll around it whilst also challenging the golfer with many non-flat lies to contend with.

I played nicely here and really enjoyed the course. The greens, although a bit damp from all the recent heavy rainfall were very good and ran true. The course was in very good condition throughout and all the members and staff I spoke to were polite and friendly.

I really enjoyed my round here and with the course as accessible as it is, its one you can easily add to your list too!
