Last night was week 3 of the TGL and Atlanta Drive GC got their season off to a flying start with a comfortable 4-0 victory over New York GC.
The result marked the lowest scoreline of the brand new TGL season so far but also the first shut-out result and as a result TGL’s novelty is in danger of fading quickly.
ESPN viewership numbers haven’t been released yet, but we can safely say viewership was nowhere near last week’s 1.3 Million average viewership.
There were also no hammers played for the first time in a TGL match, which really removed a lot of the jeopardy.
This loss for New York GC marked their second straight defeat of the season and their flat performances really resembled their flat enthusiasm for the whole competition.
Contrasting that Atlanta Drive bought into the spectacle, JT was funny and played well, but Billy Horschel was the MVP of the event right from the outset for me.
He wore some chains for his walkout and did the ‘dirty bird’ dance and throughout the match he really tried to engage with the reporters and cameras, but as good as JT and Billy were, Cantlay was as boring as ever, he seems intent on not showing an ounce of personality, Cameron Young wasn’t much better and that feeds into the overall fan experience, with golf fans expressing their unhappiness online.
I spoke to some people who attended TGL last night and they said the atmosphere on site for fans was very bad, that it is very flat between holes and tough not hearing the players.
Next week sees arguably the tie everyone has been waiting for as Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links GC take on Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf and now Rory & Tiger have the task of re-injecting some excitement into the TGL.
Tiger will be looking to bounce back after being embarrassed 12-1 by Los Angeles GC in Week 2.
To recap, yea the novelty is wearing off and we’re seeing more of the negatives, but I’m still gonna stay up til 2am next week to watch.
