Everybody knows you need to get your arm straight in the golf swing. I get it… it’s hard to do. Amateur golfers all over the world struggle with this concept. It’s gotten so bad that many are looking for EXCUSES to keep their arms bent. This is not good…

Golfers who THINK they can get away with a bent lead arm are in for a world of trouble. A bent arm is the source of golf swing misery. It causes inconsistent contact and robs you of crucial power. It stops your body from working. It forces you to rely on tempo and timing.

The geometry of the swing REQUIRES a straight lead arm. If you play with a bent arm, you have to make compensations in your swing. That arm MUST get straight at some point if you want to hit the ball well. Don’t listen to anyone who claims the lead arm can be bent in the golf swing… even if they’re a pro.

If you bend it in the swing, you’ve got to straighten it. Skip that nonsense and just KEEP IT STRAIGHT. You’ll shortcut tons of problems that way.

Swing with your lead arm straight from setup to finish and you’ll see tremendous improvement in your golf game.

  1. When the trail arm exerts sufficient force coming down, the lead arm bends, as can be seen in the swings of top pros, eg Nelly Korda, Tony Finau and many others. Lee Westwood was notorious for his bent lead arm.

  2. Tom I've seen loads of your very enjoyable videos, but they're all full swings. Does your method work with 80 to 30 yard pitches, just off the green chips and of course banker shots?

  3. Even when I do the turn you are talking about I will have a very minor bend in the arm and if I attempt to keep it totally straight there is added tension in the arm.

  4. Yes, the left arm has to extend from the lower left part of neck, whilst the extensors in the hand extend the arm. The hand and the neck play a game of tug of war; and, work as antagonistic opposites. This stretches the arm out. Hold the club with your left hand; and, arch your hand out in front of you; and, wait a while. Eventually the weight of the club will extend your hand and drop down to the ground. The lower left part of your neck will react against the weight of the club and push back. Swing back, when the club drops down to the ground; and, it will be virtually impossible to bend your arm. You will actually feel your arm extend, as you swing back.

  5. Thanks, Tom, this video made it very clear to me why I seem to hit so many thin shots. I always blame it on standing up too quickly, but I now realize that it is the slight bend in my left arm that is not letting the club get down to the level of the ball and the turf. You are so practical and easy to understand. Wish I lived down here all year and could play more often and I think I could keep more of your instruction ingrained in my brain and body.

  6. Ok, so due to physical issues, it is difficult for me to make a full swing/turn and keep the left arm straight. Would I be better off shortening my backswing and keeping the arm straight? Will this reduce my distance? Thanks

  7. A slight left arm bed at the top and then unloading the snap back through the ball feels like a power source to me and probably a lot of other people, I know it's better to keep it straight for contact and low point but my left arm feels tight and uncomfortable when I really try to keep it straight.

  8. Haven't signed in for awhile now and I'm seeing some changes. I hear that a porno mustache will shave off a stroke or two. Can you confirm, my favorite science based professor of golf? 🙂

  9. Thanks TOM. Great Video something I keep my straight other times no. How understand the reason why. You are the teacher on untype

  10. Tom “Dr. Dolittle” Saguto … he talks to the animals! In your previous video from a week ago (“You’re not improving because …”), filmed at the same location, a squirrel was running about for ages in the background in the same spot as today’s hawk. Another great lesson, by the way, viewing from freezing Scotland.

  11. I love how quiet and carefully you spoke in this one. The way people do when they're really really angry. We all can hear you screaming on the inside. Well done. Great show and reminder. Make the hawk a regular.

  12. When you don't have access to YouTube, your only option is to fly in and watch in person, Ha !

  13. Finally, after this video I got my Saguto-swing to work. Hitting 160 yards with i8 and 269 yards with driver. 😀👍

  14. Hawk realizing if he keeps left arm straight, much easier to pick up mouse off ground. Left arm bent, scrapes the top of said mouses' noggin, therefore, going hungry. Even a hawk can learn a valuable lesson from left arm straight. 🐀🐭

  15. Thank you so much for fixing my golf swing—honestly, you’ve saved my life, my sanity, and my entire existence on the course. The yips had taken over like a dark cloud, haunting me with every backswing, but now it’s like you’ve exorcised the demons from my soul. My yips family has disbanded, my slice is a distant memory, and I can finally face the fairway with confidence. You’re not just a swing coach—you’re a miracle worker, a hero, a legend. THANK YOU!

  16. Tom I absolutely love this and have been watching this daily. Question for you at set up should I try to have more weight on my left leg at set up or even distribution? I sometimes hit the shots fat still doing this demonstration and trying to find out as to why

  17. Hi Tom. I have incorporated the straight lead arm, tucked trail arm and weight forward and am down to a single digit index as a result. The thing I struggle with is straightening the trail leg for the hip turn. I see you doing it, and mentioning it but is there a video that focus on it? Thanks for all your help, you have really elevated my golf game.

  18. For me, who has been following you now for almost 3 years, I wasn't turning my shoulders. So my arms weren't collapsing at the top of the swing (folding, as you call it), but I was compensating, by casting my wrists! This was to keep my lead arm straight. Inconsistent and steep results!!
Once I saw you mention pointing that lead shoulder to the ball, I started turning my shoulders and the hips naturally followed. MUCH better contact! I cannot wait to get out to the heated driving range (Michigan) and hit some balls again. I was making very consistent contact in the fall once I learned how important them houlders are in this swing.
