Today I look at the new Callaway Elyte X Irons, they could be the most forgiving irons of 2025, they might be the longest irons for slow swing speeds, they could be the easiest irons for mid/high handicap golfers but I found out that this wasnt the case, check out this video before you buy your next set of irons.

Nice looking irons but probably not worth buying anything more than gap wedge to six iron forget the five that will be about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike to the target market.
No iron is perfect. Everyone makes good stuff and literally takes trying everything out.
I don't understand how 18 degrees launch for a 5 is considered low.
Even though the spin is low, 187 yard carry 5 iron, stopping within 10 yards isn’t that terrible really. I’d love to be able to carry a 5 iron that far and I’m only in my mid 30’s and play off 7 😂
Sounds like some of the imperfect features of this club would be solved simply by switching to the standard model. The X model is going to produce these results naturally because they are chunky and low spin. What’s perfect for one golfer is not for another, so for 10 golfers, you probably need about 200 sets of irons and let them try them all before they find something that suits each person.no manufacture can make an iron that will satisfy the masses. You’re always going to have critique from one golfer to another over a club. That is perfect for one but not for another person. Kind of like choosing your wife.
I’m looking at a custom fit for a set of irons, currently not rules any brands out but making a chart to compare lofts V iron number to compare against the set I’m playing (Wilson D7 forged).
There are a few brands out there where the lofts are 3 degrees or more, less than what I’m playing. The Wilson’s already stronger than my clubs of 30 years ago. Certainly do not want to be pulling a 5 iron that is lofted down to a 4 and then finding need an extra wedge. My set at present has PW @44, then I have three wedges 50,54,58 the latter effectively for bunker play.
Haven’t bought new clubs for years. The new stuff is at a ridiculous price. I play Ping i210 5-UW which are in my spec after a fitting. Bought second hand. Great irons. New clubs are just priced way beyond their cost. Speak to a professional club maker. Custom fit is the thing to remember, but don’t think new stuff is the only option. Remember and get a copy of your spec.
Great content as per iv never played callaway irons before and get where your coming from but i do play with there driver and 3/5 woods which serve me well my irons normally would be Mizunos but recently change to tokomos 4 down to pw which im finding ok anyway keep up the good work 👍
I just picked up Srixon Z forged Mark 2 4-PW iron set. Modus 120 stiff. UTX grips.
Could be the best set of 'afforable' blades on the matket.
Srixon for the win!
Great honest review. There is only so much that can be corrected by strong lofts.
Bought new Titleist T350 irons. All one degree weak so I can hit the 6 iron well. You have to have a high swing speed to hit a 5 iron in these strong lofts. And if you have that speed, you dont need strong lofts. A gimmick
You’re a long way down the grip there Andy.
I’m not a great golfer , but do try. Although I’m no expert it looks as though you’re wearing too thick a top clothing and restricting your swing compared to your technique in your summer clothing .
I think personally your review will change when you drop some top layers.
Never mentioned the HL Elyte irons if you’re struggling for stopping power?
I had the same issue with my TM Stealth irons. They went miles, but they just wouldn't stick to a green. I have the Callaway Apex CBs now and although I have lost about 10 yards per club, I know that the ball will stop on a dime. I'm not sure that I could go back to the jacked lofts again. Thanks for the vid as always.
I've seen a few reviews of the new callaway equipment and people saying they don't like the look? I disagree, I don't think these are bad, especially the irons
I think to low spin and strong loft are definitely related. I solved that with my purchase last summer of AI Smoke Max Fast . Lighter and weaker lofted helps with launch and spin. I only carry 7-AW irons and 5-6 hybrids. Test the Elyte Max Fast!
There are so many golf test YouTubers it has become just… Bla bla bla bla and extremely boring. I can say it's 98% the same words and talk about all big brand clubs they test. And why, they can't afford to be honest and make golf brands get pissed and with that lose both users and brands that do not want them to do tests. And when you meet (yes I worked on tours and with big brands in china and USA) the pga, liv or dp tour players they really don't care what brand they have and actually make fun of people golf equipment idolizing, it's what they get paid that matters . Personally I like to play golf, don't look so much at golf tournaments because it's just bad competition and it's just a tiny sport. It's about 0.02% of the world that actually plays golf, and it's a very white rich sport where only they can afford to play golf, practice in schools and with trainers. So in tournaments you can see how most players don't put in the effort or need to win, they already have a lot of family money, and even if they don't make the cut they have money from sponsors and commercials, and often even some thousands of dollars from the tournament. I'm sure if golf was bigger and possible to play and practice just a few of today's top 300 would have a chance to be in any tour. Let's say Africa had much better opportunities, and south America, or China and India, even Europe and the USA and from 0.02 that play golf went to 10% of the world.
Most golfers that would hit the X probably would not hit above a 6 iron. I think most would use a hybrid. Good information either way. Thanks.
Thank you for saying they are chunky irons. Other reviews ive seen havent mentioned that. Also great job on doing common sense reviews.
I tried out the Elyte hybrids yesterday, and as a new golfer with a high handicap all I can say is holy cow, do they hit wonderfully. They are probably the easiest to hit hybrids I've ever tried in the past six months. Wish I could afford them. 🙂
If the jacked lofts are to help the average golfer I don’t see why the OEMs don’t offer a 7 piece set consisting of a 5 and 6 hybrid plus 7-GW. I know there are a few out there but you would think that this should be the norm instead of the exception. 🤷🏻♂️
A 21° 5 iron? How ridiculous. Twenty years ago we were all being told to drop our 'hard to hit' 3 and 4 irons in exchange for hybrids. Back then they were lofted 21° and 24°. Nowadays that is a 5 and 6 iron. Will they eventually make a 21° Pitching wedge? I hope so. Then I can fill my bag with 7 gap wedges and brag to my buddies that "It's just a wedge for me!" as I line up my approach shots. 😂
Good honest review, if you struggle with the 5 iron most of us definitely, will without going to new shafts and a really good fitting. They do look good though.
Seems every set every year always starts with the long irons and the 9 and pw in the sets are always poor, lack feel, aren't really as versatile as they need or should be.
Maybe a manufacturer will start with the PW and 9 iron and get them sorted and then build the rest around them.
I know most people use different Lob, Gap, Sand from the sets but with PW's now generally around 40-42 degrees, that means probably carrying a 5th wedge or have much wider gapping.
Hi Andy. I was thinking about trying the Elyte irons. Have you tried the standard ones yet or just the x?
Be interested to know how you got on and if they had a better decent angle.
Cheers
Mark
Good looking irons – I’d always get fitted
