The PGA Tour continues the West Coast swing with the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. Golf fans and bettors note that this week’s tournament at Torrey Pines is Wednesday through Saturday as the PGA Tour avoids competing for ratings against the NFL conference championship games on Sunday, Jan. 26 following the divisional round games this past weekend.

Last week’s The American Express event produced another longshot winner with Sepp Straka (60/1) firing a 25-under par score of 263 to finish 2-shots in front of runner-up Justin Thomas.

Torrey Pines South Course Hole-By-Hole

Now the 156 players get a tougher test at Torrey Pines, as the winning scores in this event each of the past five years has ranged from -13 to -15 under par. Also, veterans Justin Rose (-21) and Jason Day (-10) won here in 2019 and 2018. The top 65 players and ties make the cut after 36 holes.

Last year, each of the top-12 finishers in the Farmers gained on Approach with winner Matthieu Pavon 3rd on the week in approach and 5th putting. He cashed in a big check for himself and bettors with Pavon +12500 odds (125/1) or longer to win ahead of the tournament.

When Max Homa won at Torrey Pines in 2023, he and runner-up Keegan Bradley finished finished 1-2 on Proximity to hole on approach from 125-150 yards.

Torrey Pines’ South Course – which hosts three of the four rounds this week – is one of the longest setups on Tour, measuring 7,765 yards. It’s a championship venue that features smaller poa annua greens (ave. 5,000 sq. ft) and water in play on just one hole. ShotLink data is only available on the South Course, which Director of Agronomy Devin Cullen has noted as being the driest winter he has experienced in his nine years with the last significant rain event in early April. Great weather has produced a significant increase in number of rounds on the public course, which has resulted in increase in wear and tear on the property.

Approach play including focus from 125-150 yards is a key strokes gained stat this week. Also Around the Green play and Driving distance gained as long hitters rise towards the top along with stronger long iron players. The South Course features eight Par 4 holes that measure more than 450 yards.

For many golf fans and bettors, the Farmers remains the true start of the PGA season. The tournament tees off four weeks of high-profile events with a pair of Signature Events at Pebble Beach and Genesis Invitational sandwiched between the popular Phoenix Open over Super Bowl weekend.
