The Patriots are interviewing Ben Johnson for their Head Coach opening. Should the Patriots hire Johnson, bypassing Mike Vrabel and others? We look at the pros and cons of a Johnson hire. Tap in!
I kind of like Vrabel becasue I remember he coached really well vs the Pats when they beat Brady in his last game. He had complete control over the clock and knew what was going on. This team really needed to clean up the offsides and holdings and dumb penalties. Find talented coordinators and I think it could work out well.
I think they'll wait to make a HC decision until the 24th. I think since he's getting up there in age Kraft wants to make sure he gets it right this time. I'm certain he wants to see this team win another SB. Because of that i don't see them taking the chance on missing out on getting interviews with the playoff coaches that will be available.
If the choice is between a first time Head Coach Ben Johnson and a guy who knows the team owners intimately, knows the fans, knows the area and (most importantly) knows what to do as Head Coach because he's had experience; you go with the guy with experience. You go with Mike Vrabel.
Nick go and watch any press conference from Johnson and then tell me you think he's an introvert. He isn't Dan Campbell gregarious but imo it's poor reporting by these journos to go with the introvert line. It's a gross exaggeration.
Ben Johnson would be intriguing, but the safe pick is Mike Vrabel. Vrabel is a better fit at this point I time. Vrabel would bring instant credibility and some stability
I don't want last seasons wide receivers coach but I don't want Welker. Be serious Nick, Miami has talent at wide receiver much more than the Patriots if they fired him with that talent you want him to come here where the receivers suck? No thanks
Awesome again Nick! I feel like Vrabel is the safe bet and Ben Johnson is the high risk/high reward choice. I have leaned towards Vrabel since the Mayo firing. But now I’m leaning Ben Johnson. I know there are a lot of OCs that fail but I look at McVay, Kevin O’Connell, and guys like that, and what they could do for Drake Maye and I think the risk is worth taking.
Is Welker a good receivers coach? I honestly have no idea. We saw what happened with Troy Brown who was brutal at getting his guys to correctlu execute their assignments,
Ben Johnsons play calling looks great when he always has three or four guys on the field that immediately beat their opponent off of the line of scrimmage and in their routes on a consistent basis…Sure he's good, but how much would he be doing if he was given what Bill gave his coordinators for several years? Much easier for Jared Goff when he always has guys open…I"m not saying Johnson isn't a good coach but he has superior route runners….Remember,,Johnson is your HEAD coach…We know what Vrabel did even with limited quarterbacks….We have zero clue if johnson has the acumen to be a head coach…We can guarantee Vrabel does….If Bob Kraft MISSES again,,he may lose the fanbase for a very long time….It's Vrabel or no one,,really…
Excellent subject to get people involved,Nick! I'm not sure Johnson,,as good as he's been, can provide as a head coach what Vrabel's experience and success can at this point…If it were my money,,,Vrabel is pretty much a gift being dropped in Krafts lap.
Alex Van Pelt would have looked like Ben Johnson with those players. Can’t help but wonder whether or not Ben would be viewed as a genius having to try and create a viable offensive game plan with this lot. It’s about the players. No WRs ,No OLine talent and crappy underwhelming RB play.
Is backing out via text the modern day resignation by napkin? All that matters really if he wins, but if didn't pay attention to or give the media anything, that may be the best way to be for Johnson in a media market like this.
You say: “can Ben Johnson improve?” If you’re an introvert, you’re an introvert. You can’t change. Could we create a hybrid model whereby he gets the head coach title and money, but someone else does the human elements? Probably not. So we can only envy Detroit for having him. If he’s smart, he stays in Detroit and demands 10-15MM compensation. He’s a coordinator, period. That doesn’t mean he can’t get rich.
I’m not sure Vrabel is right. Much harder to find a brilliant new era offensive mind like Ben than just…….another defensive minded patriot retread. Would you rather have Vrabel or Johnson developing your rookie QB. Give me Johnson, and keep McDaniels out too. His over complex offensive system is part of the reason we couldn’t develop young WR’s. The Perkins-Earhardt system is antiquated. Time to move on from it all this time, including Patriot retreads
It’s got to be Vrable, only because this team and org is so effed up that we couldn’t take advantage of a good OC. No Oline, no receivers, not defense now. Questionable drafting, who’s running the team? It’s a hot mess. Vrable probably has more experience with handling organizational issues and an existing relationship with the krafts.

I don't always agree with Nick, at least he is fair and consistent.

Don’t over think this Kraft don’t get Vrabel here , Ben Johnson is going to turn Drake maye into a monster.

Team Ben Johnson. It's time to move towards the future, if you keep living in the past the future will pass u by.
Good show today Nick
I’m ok either way with Mike and Ben, imo Mike is the safer choice but I do like to fantasize of what Ben could do with Drake Maye.
Thanks!
Sure he can coordinate, but can he COACH?
Team Vrabel

Tee Higgins is excited about going to the team that pays him the most money
Nick I’m like you in that I would be happy with either. Excited even. But I’m leaning Johnson because of Drake and the offense/play calling.

My vote: 75% Vrabel, 25% Johnson

In RFK’s chair, II’d hope that he/they will apply the the experience & lessons learned when evaluating these candidates.
