Hey Buddy, you been watching me play golf? The theme of this video is how I learned how to break 80.
Good stuff MSH!! question, you are obviously a good golfer.. What’s the best handicap you’ve had??
Boxing against Mike Tyson is scary as heck, unless your Jake Paul and pay for a paddy-cake match 🤣. Love the dedication MSH 🤘😎
No problem laying up for me. A bogey is better than a tripple
Great video MSH!
I rarely play short of hazards on a par three but it makes good sense when conditions are less than optimal.
My coach has me doing the same strategy on holes over 165y.
If players recieve a handicap shot on hole, then take 4 for 2 stableford points and move to next hole.
I carry three to five clubs so playing short is really setting up for my wedge. I love my wedge! Merry new year!
Your dedication is second to none! Another great video.
Three different approaches – 2 pars and one bogey (that should have been par) – it’s a good lesson to learn – you don’t have to hit to the flag on par 3s
Great advice as usual. Thanks MSH. "Hit'em straight"
Happy Christmas MSH. good video and dedication in that weather.
When you're a short hitter, you're always laying up. 🤣🤣
As a short hitter myself, long par 3s are the bane of my existence 😂. My home course has two. The first is similar to the one in this video. Water front and right, but depending on tee placement it can be upwards of 200yd. The second is a narrow, tree infested fairway that can also be upwards of 200yd depending on the tees.
Is that course open??? Or did you climb over the fence?
Your a trooper making videos in the rain and cold. Great info! Thx
This is great advice. Billy Casper laid up on the par 3 third hole at Winged Foot in the 1959 US Open. He made par all 4 days and won.
I'm having a good amount of success with a layup-forward strategy, in avoiding blowup holes. However what I'm thinking about is how to know when your game is ready and how to transition into a more aggressive plan without going backwards in score. I figure this is key to starting to get low 80s/high 70s.
Your three thought processes, depending on skill level are great. The reward does not outweigh the risk.
The first time I really thought about "Ignore the water" was when I was playing a round with two guys who were high handicap players. They probably shot around 110. They could both easily hit the ball 130 yards in the air with their irons. They did it for most of the holes before a par three over a river. It was maybe 90 yard carry to clear the water. They both got up and said "I hate this hole. I always hit 2 balls in the water." They did.. LOL… I got up and said "What water" and put the ball on the green.
A few holes later, we had to hit back across the river. One of the guys walked up and said "WHAT WATER" and laughed. He put the ball on the green. He was a convert.
In this case, there was no way to avoid the water. BUT, it was a relatively short shot to clear it.
The power of positive thinking may not turn you into a better ball striker, but if you are thinking "Don't hit it into the water", you brain does not hear negatives. It hears "Hit it into the water".
I think the secondary tip on this is for high handicap players to get better at chipping and putting. If you can be tidy in close, you don't stress leaving it short of the green because you can build confidence getting up and down or taking a stress-free bogey. As a high handicap player, bogey is a good score! I found it interesting and entertaining that each way you played this hole, you ended up with close to the same putt for par!
That's a great strategy tip. My course has one par 3 over water but it's so long (horizontally) in relation to the green that if you hit it right or left you're in the water. So I club up and take the occasional hitting it over the green shot. But that strategy can be used in a lot of other situations where playing it safe makes a lot of sense and I will definitely be more away of those situations next year when I'm back out on the course.
excellent!
One generally land where you last look. If you look at water or a bunker or a tree, that is where one will go. It is not water or a bunker or a tree until you hit it. LOL! Look and focus on where you want to land! Good video! Thanks.
This is the story of my golfing life. As a true shirt hitter most holes play one shot longer than, I just take the extra shot.
Good advice! Happy New Year!
Good video. Thank you. I need to play smart on holes similar to this.
Did you say in your New Year’s Day video that at 170 yards you were hitting your 50 degree wedge? I think it was first hole you played.
I like your videos. But, I never lay up. Laying up is not near as much fun and always going for it. Laying up is for sissies!
Great advice, my buddy sees water and he starts to cry
