Erie bartender describes what she likes about her job
Rachel Schulz, 26, who works at Bay House Oyster Bar & Restaurant, discusses why she likes tending bar.
During a tour of Hazards Mini Golf and Social Pub on the second floor at 419 State St. back in November, a lot of uncertainty was still looming in the room with a few important details.
Co-owners Tony Arrigo and Tom McQueeney were still deciding when opening day would be, what the final menu would include, and there still were a few holes being worked on.
On Dec. 29, following a soft opening on Dec. 14, Hazards officially opened in downtown Erie after the approval of their liquor license.
While the business may not have been “…100% ready…”, Arrigo said they “…wanted to get going while making some revenue and (be) open to family and friends that were in town.”
Arrigo said that they still have to finish up some final construction, but he said the community was impressed overall with what they have seen.
“It went well, it honestly did,” Arrigo said. “It was busy…We did well on the mini golf side and on the regular sales side.”
Arrigo said for the days they were open, more than 100 rounds of mini golf were played each day. The rounds are how they measured sales success.
Positive feedback after first rounds completed
The new business drew in a mixed crowd its opening weekend.
“From what I saw there were all sorts of people there,” Arrigo said. “Friday and Saturday we saw more couples on dates and even some families. Then on Sunday, there were a lot more families with kids. I was getting positive messages from families that had their kids…there for something to do during the day.”
“It was great to open up and see so many people,” Arrigo said. “It was well received and we’re thankful to those who supported us.”
Going forward
Hazards will be open this weekend starting at 3 p.m. to around 11 p.m. or midnight, depending on how busy it is.
On Sunday, the owners plan to make mini golfing more family orientated and will be open from noon to 8 p.m.
Through the month of January, Hazards will be open Wednesdays through Sundays with hours remaining consistent with what they are currently running.
The first round of mini golf at Hazards will cost $10 and includes equipment, and the replay rate is $6.
Mini golf leagues coming soon at Hazards
Mini golf leagues are also on the horizon at Hazards, and Arrigo said they will begin on Jan. 20-22.
These leagues will consist of teams with two to four players playing 18 holes during select time frames with playoffs and a championship.
Those interested in setting up a league should contact Hazards at 814-453-3705 for more details or visit Hazardserie.com.
Hazards Bar up and running
A major reason Hazards decided to open in December was because they received their liquor license.
“The bar is fully open now with food and drink,” Arrigo said. “We have non-alcoholic drinks along with hot dogs and Uncrustables.”
Customers can also place an order at any of the establishments in the Flagship City Food Hall and bring their food to Hazards, or have the order delivered.
