Scott started the day at -9. Through 12 holes, the Aussie is -7 for the day to be at -16 for the tournament.
He’s four shots behind co-leaders Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa (-20).
Scott’s outstanding front nine has helped him up the leaderboard. The veteran shot a stunning -7 par 29 on the front nine, recording birdies in seven of nine holes.
Scott’s compatriot Cam Davis is also in a tie for fifth on -16 after a chip in for eagle on the par 4 14th.
Davis whacked his tee shot on the short par four, landed just left of the green before rolling a chip shot into the cup.
Scott has been in terrific form over the past six to nine months and said following the second round that even at 44, it’s not “unrealistic” to get back among the top of the rankings.
“I don’t think it’s unrealistic to think I can still achieve a couple big victories out here that I would like, and that’s really what drives me,” he said.
Conditions at the Kapalua Plantation Course have been favourable all week, with plenty of low scores recorded and a high chance the winning score is at least -30.
