Pink cheeks and frozen golf balls were the norm Saturday during the annual Des Plaines Chili Open golf tournament.

Warm afternoon sun couldn’t compete with the frigid temperature as golfers battled typical January weather at the Des Plaines Golf Center.

With his cigar ablaze, Glen Michelini of Niles chipped to the green from a frozen sand trap.

“I am having a blast with my family,” said Vito Pelletiere of Des Plaines, who admitted he hadn’t played golf in more than 20 years.

The popular annual winter golf tournament offered contests, raffles, and plenty of great golf prizes, too.
