In todays video the average golfer will be comparing irons to hybrids, at what point should you change from an iron to a hybrid, what are the benefits of using hybrids, should you use hybrids to help you play better golf, are hybrids easier to use than irons? I will answer all these questions with the help of trackman data during a custom fit for new golf clubs.
I have a relatively slow swing speed and want to know if hybrids can make golf easier and help me to score better. I will be doing this test using the PXG Black Ops hybrids and the PXG 0317T irons. Can the custom fit process help me make better choices when buying golf clubs?

It’s a bit like a performance car most people only care how fast it is and how long it takes to get there. No one ever talks about how quickly it stops. It’s the same with golf, there is no use driving 300yards if it’s 2 fairways across, or if you are hitting the nicest irons ever made 3 ft off the ground into the trees. Writing a 3 on the score card does a lot more for my ego.
be embarrassed i wouldn't use such adultery………shame on you for avoiding purity
You have to ask yourself, am I better at golf than Fred Couples? If his longest club is a 7 iron…
I switched to a full hybrid set last year and am enjoying them completely. It is strange to look at a hybrid wedge, but it does make the game more enjoyable.
Another great video Andy. Thanks. Happy New year.
I’m still consistent with my 6…but with 5 iron I fall flat with the minimal consistency.
Without watching the video I am guessing Andy's longest iron should be a 6i, or a weak 5i (at least 25 degrees of loft). I used to have a similar club head speed to Andy and a weak (by modern standards) 5i at 26 degrees was my longest iron. I say "used to have" the same swing speed because whilst Andy complains he is getting slower I am, to my great surprise at my age, have got quite a lot faster.
As the video shows one advantage of the hybrids is the amount of adjustability they have compared to irons. I definitely need to look again at my 4h which can fly a bit far and with a ball flight which is a bit flat – maybe a hybrid which is 2 degrees weaker than my current hybrid would be better for me
Andy ,I’m looking at how the ball comes off the screen as to where you hit it straight or left with the first hybrid.🤔
Hybrids and high lofted fairway woods are amazing. A ball struck with a 24 degree 9 wood will will hold almost any green, unless you skull it
Driver, 3 wood, 7 wood, 3 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 7 hybrid, 8 iron, PW, GW, 50, 56-58 SW, 60, Chipper, Putter.
Possible can drop the 3 hybrid.
I start my irons at 7 -have a 6 is seldom used -off the tee occasionally r?
I am changing to complete hybrids in 25 !
EGO. It has such an impact on our golf. The only thing that matters (apart for enjoying yourself) is the number that goes in the little box at the bottom of the scorecard. If we can reduce that number by using more hybrids then we're playing better golf. And that is a bigger bragging point than shiny clubs.
Great video.
Great video Andy. I’ve done something similar. My longest iron is a 6 iron. I then have a 5 & 6 hybrid and also a 9 wood. All very easy to use and consistent. All the best for 2025
I play Dr, 5w, 7w, 9w, 5h, 6i. My gf plays the same and a 6h!
Love this video mate. Defo a bit of me
Interesting what you said about swinging smoother with the hybrid. Something I do as you just feel like you are going to hit a good shot with them. I carry my 7 iron 145 my 6 iron 155 then my 6 hybrid 165 and my 5 hybrid 175 so they all fit in perfectly
I even prefer to go down the shaft with my 6 hybrid and punch one in for a 155 shot rather than use my 6 iron
Keep banging the hybrid drum. Best clubs out there for the average golfer
Have a 4H, now I’ll consider a 5H or a 6H.
Whats your gamer irons?
Great video. I am the same age as Fred Couples. I watched a video where he talked about using hybrids/woods (6 of them) above his 7 iron. That got me to switch to a similar setup. I’d like to see you, Andy, play a round with your new setup to see how you score. I really enjoy your channel.
utility irons also cavity back irons work great
Just picked up my new PXG GEN6 irons and working with fitter we ended up stopping at 7I and put a 6H that is lofted down slightly and slightly longer shaft to really dial in a yardage I needed. Really happy with how they turned out and after a few range sessions they look to be hitting all the marks. Now just need to wait for Midwest USA to come out of the freeze.
Take a look at Fred Couples bag I think he's playing 6 woods now with hybrids included he even plays a 6 hybrid Fred Couples is one of the best ball Strikers that ever played golf and he is playing a 6 hybrid in his bag right now he says it's so much easier to hit than a 6-iron or a 5-iron I watched a video of this not long ago Fred Couples on the range with all his Woods
As I've gotten older, I started using 3-6 hybrids. They've been great for me.
I have to learn to hit a low punch shot with my Adams 3 hybrid. Punching a 4 or 5 under the branches is the only shot I would miss.
I play 3H to 6H and then 7i onwards. Works for me. It's something you have to test yourself.
No reason at all to be be embarrassed about playing hybrids. I am 63 and I just added my third hybrid. My goal is to enjoy golf. I do not allow any false bravado to interfere with that.
I love your channel, and videos. I am 58 years old and recently switched to callaway big bertha hybrids and irons. Love them.
Great video. Adds to your relationship with your audience as an average golfer for average golfers. Great to see you finally coming along with the advances in technology and in our grasp of reality. I played forged MB blades for years, admired their sleek design and beauty. Have been replacing 3,4,5 and 6 with with 7,9 and 11 woods. I’m beginning to think golfers now, after being fitted like this, should forget irons from 7 up and start with hybrids or woods. Will play better, enjoy the game more, and save money in the end.
P.S. what a gorgeous shop !!
As we get older I have found a higher lofted hybrid like 27 degrees and a 7 wood is best for me. Don’t carry a 3 wood any longer but a 5 wood instead. If I need a three wood tee shot I tee a driver lower and choke way down and this gives me the control and accuracy I need and roughly 245 (roll included) off the tee.
I am 65 and I just pulled my 5 and 6 irons and replaced with hybrids. Easier to hit the hybrids for sure. Playing off a 9 index. Looking forward to seeing it the hybrids lower my scores over the next few months. One thing I noticed right away is that the hybrids are easier to hit than the irons when dealing with wet winter conditions and funky lies. Great video.
I’ve been playing 6 to 3 hybrids for 4 years now. After my shoulder surgery. Was difficult to find a 6 left handed.
The fitter is Mr personality isn’t he
Excellent video! I am 69 years old and have been using Snake Eyes hybrids for over 25 years. I have a 34, 31, 27, 23, degree one's. I had a 19° but pulled it consistently. The 23 I use sparingly. I think I am going to put a 9 wood in the bag instead of the 23. I have no problem or ego in using these clubs. They improved my game, and thats all I am concerned about.
Ping even has a 34 degree 7 hybrid that comes into my bag during the winter months!
i’m 45. carry my 32 degree 7 iron 165.
i then go straight into a 6 and 5 hybrid for the reason you mention. clear consistent gaps that can be hit. i carry my driver 270 on average so no sliuch and play mid single digits. make the. game easy not hard
Andy I think our egos stop us from using the clubs that really work opposed to what looks good.
As regards to custom fitting I was handed a Ping G2 7 iron 20 odd years ago and hit it fairly well and was told that was the club for me…..not so much proper custom fit as push to sell Ping🤬🤬🤬……nice to see things are a lot better with the amount of money you're potentially investing……….
have a good New Year Andy, Hannah……..🌟🎊🤩🥳
Dear Mr. Average Golfer. I am a huge fan of yours, and of striking with the clubs that give you the most confidence. I play with a 74 yr old gentleman who can still send a 3 iron 240 metres. But he uses Fairway Woods instead of Hybrids or long irons and his longest iron is a 7 iron. He told me the reason he uses the fairway woods is because they reduce shock and vibration in his hands while producing excellent distance. Hybrids and F-Woods are a great option for reducing pain.
I switched to 4, 5, 6, and 7 PXG Gen 5 hybrids a little over a year ago when I turned 70. It was one of the best golf decisions I ever made.
Play what fits you. I play off +5, tons of club head speed at 118-122 mph with driver. I play a 4 and a 5 hybrid because in testing my carry numbers were much more consistent vs a long iron, and the added height is a bonus. Hold a few course records and won my local club champ several times. Nothing wrong with playing what works best for you.
Yeah I’m probably going to do this myself. I’m at the age where I can hit a four iron but not as far as I used to and not as consistently. Between that and my five iron I’m not sure either should be in my bag. I’m still reluctant to give up the old 5i but if I don’t this year it will be sooner rather than later in the future.
Since replacing my mid and long irons with hybrids I've noticed that i have become far more consistent and hitting significantly more greens in regulation. I have a pretty good short game and still use a forged cavity back iron for everything inside 140 yards. I really don't understand why people want to make this game more difficult than it needs to be.
Thank you Andy. 😊😊😊
Great video especially as I also suffer from a Pull. What sort of yardage gapping should you expect between irons roughly 10 yards?
I love getting older, I get away with being grumpy, I can complain about the state of the world & how much better it used to be and the ridiculous price of a pint nowadays. Lots of things I miss from my youth, in a golf sense it’s my 3 iron, I loved hitting that thing pure, ball flight, sound (smiling just thinking about it). My longest iron is now a 6 after a fitting last year, while the 21 degree hybrid doesn’t perform the same as my 3 iron at least I can get it in the air with plenty of carry. Peeing your pants from laughing too hard is a little embarrassing, hitting hybrids is a privilege for those who have managed to live awhile. I pray I can play golf long enough that my bag goes from a hybrid straight into a SW. Have a great 2025 everyone.
In a fitting you can allow the fitter to speak. Do the irons need different shafts 6-4? Hybrid vs 9 wood?
I’m 71 carry 2,3hw, 4,5, hybrid with my PXG 6-GW. The #3 Cleveland Hywood is my tee club. Thanks Andy
At 71, years and ago I switched to hybrids. I play Ping hybrids 2 thru 7 and Ping G Max irons 8 thru SW. Within 6 months of playing this setup my scores went from upper 80's to mid 70's. I'll never go back to playing just irons.
Great timing this! I'm off to Scottsdale to get fitted for new irons this afternoon, and I've been wondering about my 5 iron. I've used a 3 and a 4 hybrid for years but I think it might be time to ditch the 5 iron now too, given that I've got a slower swing speed than yours! Cheers Andy! 👍
I bought a set of Cleveland XL Halo irons 6 to pw and love them,i bought the 5 iron and just can't hit it,i am now looking at a 7 or 9 wood as i struggle to hit hybrids,i also got a 3# hywood which i love.
At 80 years old, I bought a 90-day practice regime at Golftech. After 60 days I have a really good sense of all my clubs. In 2025 I will carry just 11-12 clubs. Top of the bag is a TaylorMade Mini driver, 3 fairway woods, one Ping G2 22-degree hybrid and 6-9 Ping G30 irons. Anxiously waiting for Spring!
