LECANTO, Fla. (WFLA) — Two women were rescued after falling approximately 50 feet from a cliff at the Black Diamond Ranch Golf course on Thursday.
According to a release from Citrus County Fire Rescue, rescuers responded to a call for a medical incident at the Black Diamond Clubhouse around 10 a.m.
“The golf course alerted us that they had found a golf cart that was abandoned near the top of a ridgeline. And they heard some people yelling from the bottom of the ridgeline,” said Citrus County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Thomas Fletcher.
On arrival, they said they found two females that had fallen off a cliff on The Quarry located near Hole 17, where they were left stranded overnight.
“They were going for a ride yesterday afternoon and they stopped to take some pictures alongside of the quarry and fell in,” said Fletcher. “They were at the bottom of about a 50 foot cliff down inside of a ravine that like an old abandoned quarry.”
Using golf carts, CCF said they were able to carry both women to the top of the quarry, and from there, they were transported to a local trauma hospital for further treatment.
The incident happened on Christmas Day but went unreported until the next morning.
“They were in poor condition. They been on the ground overnight which is terrible for anything,” said Chief Fletcher.
Both women were conscious and breathing upon discovery. The chief said it was a fluke accident and that it’s still safe for people to go near where the incident happened.
8 On Your Side reached out to the general manager for the golf course about securing the area so it doesn’t happen to anyone else. We are waiting on a response.
