isnt there a clip of roger explaining the purpose of the original rules.. ie advance and control
Postion was heavily emphasized in past because more people were coming from schools and instructors who taught Jiu-Jitsu as a form of self-defense. It's cool to always look for the submission, but the consequences of looking for them before you're in a dominant position aren't nearly as severe when you're in a Jiu-Jitsu competition as they are when you're in a fight! It's the same reason that there wasn't a huge emphasis on leg locks. A ton of those entanglements leave you in a position to get knocked out if it was a fight (the entries, too). Same reason some competitions have points. The positions that get you points are highly advantageous in a fight!
