  1. Awesome driver. Didn't have any concept of the word "fear". Many superb races and recoveries. Among all the 40 seconds he made up to Piquet in Silverstone only to overtake him in the last few laps with the dummy move. I can still remember the roar from the crowd. He claimed he heard it in his helmet. I bet he did.

  2. Emerson and Arie overtook me unproffecionaly?
Isn't that the essence of racing, being the quikest and if not being overtaken.
Just because he had a bad restart no one behind would have feld sorry for it.

  3. Indycar was viewed as a viable destination for F1 drivers back then. The split changed all that. It has taken 30 years for Indycar to regain some of it's lost stature.

  4. Nigel was the my inspiration to fall in love with F1. It started when I wanted to build a scale model race car and Tamiya had the only kit, with driver and that was Mansell’s 1990 Ferrari. From 91 on, I never missed a race, always rooting for Mansell, mostly starting from 4:30 AM PST. When Mansell switched to to Champ car, I was fortunate to bump into him and his wife in Long Beach, CA while they were both on his scooter heading back to the pits. He took the time to not only sign my Mansell T-shirt, but also chat with my British friend for a bit about their home. What and awesome guy! An American F1 and Mansell fan for life!!

  5. Mansell is a Legend, never forgot the tyre blow out in Adelaide which cost him the Championship.

Great Man, Great World Driver Champion.

  6. What a character! Like the Isle of Man TT races, with the Indy 500, you have to be there to really appreciate the speed and spectacle and courage on show. I count myself very lucky to have experienced both.

  7. Mansell had balls of steel. I watched him in quali at Siverstone in ‘91 take Abbey flat out coming off Hanger straight. Car was on the limit of grip and twitching as he approached the apex from 180mph, with the exception of Senna every other driver lifted.

  8. The 1993 Newman Haas Lola-Cosworth was the best car in the field. Michael Andretti would have won the IndyCar championship if he hadn't gone to F1.

  9. I first seen a John Player Special GP car in late 70s and loved the look of it, bad family meant I couldnt watch any tv until early 80s which is when Mansell was driving it, and watched the sport up until Mika Hakinen retired, and started again just before Max started his title wining as my lad got into it, seen some amazing things and sad things happen over the years, I thought Mansell was awesome, last of the drivers that didnt do all this fitness training yet still at the front end, followed him when he left for Indy and the things he was doing there was normal F1 driving for him yet ran rings around those there, loved it, shame about the next year but abroken back will do things to you.

  10. I watched the entire 1993 season on Eurosport here in the UK, cheering Mansell on. He won the Indy 500 in my mind, not Arie Luyendyk – who cheated by hanging WAY back instead of being close behind Mansell. That let him get the jump and go steaming past Mansell by accelerating well before the flag to resume. Luyendyk should have been disqualified for bad sportsmanship and the restart done over again.

  11. I love how humble and forth coming Nigel is. If there was ever a man who could be stuck up or about himself it’s Nigel. He’s the only person whose been the unified open wheel champion and is the only man who ever will be the unified open wheel champion. He really is the people champion

  12. Red 5 had the biggest gonads in the history of the sport. Also, kudos to his wife, who never lost faith, even though the rewards were a long time coming.

  13. Friend of mine brought back 'stuffed' pillow version of that Williams from Japan for my son in '92….his first born son now has it as his….Also, was at the Michigan 500 and watch Nigel run hard and win a riding mower! 😄

  14. I remember when Mansell blew a rear tyre on Deqeteville Road Straight in Adelaide South Australia, he managed to wrestle the Williams F1 without hitting anything. Great driver.

  15. i dont know about you
when i want a blood and grit driver who never gives up and will die to win it
it's nigel over senna for me

  16. The Lion Mansell…..Nigel you won only one world championship and you have "lost" 4 championship when you had the best car. What can I say? Well you're missed nowadays because no one wouldn't deny you were a showman in the F1 . Good times ,real men. In 1992 even me would win the championship with that Williams car . I cannot understand how and why you haven't won all the races that year.

  17. Mansell took Indycar to the world. Then it self-destructed. I recall Ferrari was looking at moving across at one point there.

  18. I recently had a chance to see behind the scenes at Williams HQ (2024) and you can tell the staff I met were just there for the 9-5, and the passion for motorsport was non-existent, such a shame for the motorsport legend I remember as a fan. Hopefully they can see the success of the past again, but they really need people that have the passion for motorsport and not simply the paycheck at the end of the month!

  19. The fastest I’ve driven was 120mph , getting to my father as he was dying, things move very very fast! ….. unimaginably fast, if you’ve never driven at 120 I CAN NOT IMAGINE driving at 200
