Improve your golf swing consistency and protect your back with this essential lesson! In this video, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb of Athletic Motion Golf show how staying “plugged in” during your backswing can generate more power, increase accuracy, and prevent swing faults like spinal overextension.
Many golfers struggle with a fake turn or upper body extension that leads to steep positions, over-the-top moves, and back pain. Using a simple extension cord drill, we’ll show you how to maintain proper posture, engage your core, and keep your swing connected for smoother, more powerful motion.
Key Points Covered:
🏌️♂️ How to maintain a neutral spine and avoid arching your back
🏌️♂️ The importance of proper core engagement for stability and rotation
🏌️♂️ How to build a “plugged-in” backswing for effortless power and accuracy
🏌️♂️ Why “unplugging” during your backswing causes inconsistency and physical strain
Using our Athletic Motion Golf training tips, you’ll train your body to move efficiently and develop a safer, more connected turn. Watch the video to see how staying connected through the backswing creates better pelvis movement and helps unleash stored power in the downswing.
Practice the extension cord drill today, record your swing, and compare it against the checkpoints we provide. Unlock a stronger golf swing and enjoy more consistent shots while reducing the risk of back injuries.

That extension move is a key piece in the Stack and Tilt system. I wonder how they would respond to this…
It looks like you are talking about turn being the spiral staircase idea that Pete Cowen talks about?
The part that I don't understand is that it seems that if you don't have some type of extension on the backswing you are going to bird dog in the back swing.
What about long drive compétition !
There is so much emphasis on getting to 90 degrees on the back swing these days. Problem is, if your flexibility is somewhat restricted , then as you try to continue to coil you end up cheating and end up with extension in the backswing. Once I stopped worrying about getting to 90 degrees (and accepted I’m getting older!) my swing was in a much better place.
Pictures and feelings? Golf p*Rn at its best fellas. Thank you and happy holidays. GO AMG
Do you brace your core in the backswing to create this stretch shortening cycle in your core?
People always show golf back pain as being lower back or sciatic pain. I actually get thorasic spine tightness and pain, which id love to clear up
This has the side benefit of smoothing out my take away tempo. I definitely can get rushed based on years of being warned about slow backswings. This feels controlled and coiled. Kudos
Bird doging😂 sounds like something you'd do at a dark country lay-by in the north of England😳
Good content!
A lot of good dominos fall doing this correctly. Would imagine y'all see way more over turns than under turns
Going back 90 degrees is fine as long as you are physically able to do so . But the simple fact is that few of us are capable of doing so; a shorter backswing then is optimal for consistency , producing power and avoiding injuries .
I remember you guys had a backswing drill for width where you push your right hand against a wall to your right and straighten the arm a bit in the latter part of the backswing. I think rehearsing that might have accidentally got me "unplugging" a bit by over-extending the spine as I pushed my upper body away from the wall. What's the best feel for marrying these two drills, so we keep some width without unplugging?
Jt over swings a touch his lift is pretty high too
