Penn State’s potential bowl path is set! Check out athletictravel.com to book your reservation for the potential trip!

On Sunday afternoon, the Penn State Nittany Lions football team discovered its destiny in the College Football Playoff. The committee rewarded the team’s Big Ten schedule and its close losses to Ohio State and Oregon with the sixth seed in the playoff bracket. Penn State fell only one spot after losing in the Big Ten Championship game to fourth in the overall playoff rankings. With the conference champions getting byes into the first round, Penn State was the second non-conference champion in the playoff, behind Texas in the fifth spot.

Join the Penn State Football Playoff Seeding Reaction Show as we discuss the team’s first-round matchup against the 11th-seeded SM Mustangs, who beat out Alabama for the final spot in the playoff bracket. Blue White Illustrated experts Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer join the show live from Indianapolis to discuss how the playoff committee handled the playoff bracket, their thoughts about Penn State’s matchup with SMU, and the team’s overall chances of making a run at a national championship.

Did Penn State get the best possible path?

As Bauer pointed out during the run-up to conference championship weekend, the biggest debate around college football would be about penalizing participation in those games. Penn State was not penalized for losing to the top-ranked team. ESPN’s Reece Davis asked Playoff Committee Chairman Ward Manuel about just how fair it was for Oregon and Penn State to get drastically different paths foward.

“It turns out, the way things have fallen, it might be the six seed instead that is deemed more advantageous. Oregon, the only undefeated team in the country. You guys have deemed them the best team in this playoff. They are the Big Ten champions, and they just beat Penn State. And then when you look at their quarter-final game against either Ohio State or Tennessee, it might be that the ducks have a more disadvantageous road than the six-seed Penn State does in taking on an SMU team that barely made it in, and Boise State, who is not quite as highly ranked.”

Manuel deferred answering the question, saying that it was his committee’s job to rank the top 25 teams in the country. From there, the rules of automatic byes in the playoffs changed the picture for teams in the field. But it stands to reason that Penn State’s path is favorable.

We discuss those notions on the show as well.

What we know about SMU

From there, we discuss what we know about the first-round matchup with SMU, which will be held at Beaver Stadium on Dec. 21st. We give you a quick preview of the players you need to know and how the team has played so far this season.

  1. Notre Dame should have been seeded ahead of Penn St. Apparently someone at Penn St has some goods on people on the CFP Comm. I've never seen a program get such preferential treatment for accomplishing nothing all year than Penn St. Absurd. Notre Dame got screwed.

  2. Valiant defeat? Just what dud you expect? As long as clueless Franklin is the coach you and expect to be cryi g in your beer. And it wasn't close, you know that in your broken heart. 1-15 In big games. He is not an A COACH, never was. Maybe they could get Cale Sanderson to coach the team

  3. Former SMU athlete… TLDR on SMI. the ACC Championship game was not the best game we played. We have a great defense line. Lost our top receiver mid year. 5+ receivers have 300+ yards. We are penalty prone up front. Jennings is not a running QB, it’s designed roll outs. Secondary isn’t the best statistically but also we are good at reducing explosive plays. If we spread a team out, we can get out and run. O Line and D line play is good despite our size disadvantage. Kept Clemson to 0 sacks and their d line is similar to Penn State. SMU can create lots of pressure against an o line.

  4. Drew Allar? Well, I ain't got anything nice to say so I'll keep it to myself.

But…hope Penn State can beat SMU in spite of his untrustworthy presence!

  5. Notre dame may want to join a conference to get taken more seriously in seeding or get a potential for a top 6 seeding placement.

  6. Guess regular season means nothing . Yes Ohio State had a terrible loss to our rival at home , but if I remember right we beat you at your place and Indiana and lost by one at Oregon. You guys beat who .. Illinois. Talk about getting screwed ! Sure Michigan AD Committee Chair had something to do with it!

  7. Is Franklin going to continue to go for 2 when it makes no sense? I like how the team played last night but he infuriates me on occasion.

  8. Interesting matchup. SMU has finally recovered from the NCAA Death Penalty, PSU has finally made the Playoffs (recovering from a version of the Death Penalty). And, sets up a Bowl Game Re-match that goes back to the origins of "We Are" and Wally Triplett! SMU has the famous Doak Walker, but we had Wally Triplett! That bowl game was a 13-13 tie. This one most definitely will not end in a tie! WE ARE . . .

  9. If I was Penn State I would forget that Oregon game as quickly as possible and get focused on SMU because SMU is for real. SMU definitely can play and definitely deserved that playoff spot.

  10. I'm glad that there is someone besides me who does NOT want to listen to Gus Johnson. It was fantastic that Fox wasn't doing the B1G Championship Game. I really enjoyed listening to the CBS crew instead. IDK who the announcers will be for our first-round game, but I do know that the TNT broadcasts will be produced by ABC/ESPN. NO GUS JOHNSON!!!!!!!

  11. 1000% I'm over with big ten officiating crews… I'm very excited to play a big game without big ten refs

  12. Q: How many SEC teams does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: One. They hold the bulb and the whole world revolves around them.
