Fred Couples has the smoothest looking golf swing, yet hits the ball 300+ yards. Video includes Fred’s driving tips. How does Fred generate so much speed in his golf swing while not losing accuracy. Well Fred is about to tell you. Fred goes through his golf swing in detail in this video including the takeaway, how the hips move, how the shoulders move and when he releases the club for maximum distance off the tee. Fred is one of my favorites of all time. Enjoy.

  1. First time I saw Couples play was when he was in 8th grade. I have watched this explanation in this and other videos over 100 times. I think I finally get it. This is the difference between releasing properly and 'handle/grip dragging.'

  2. My theory about why this works is that it is the mass of the lead arm flying down and separating from the chest that is pulling the club down into the ball similar to an upside down Tebuchet, with shaft as sling and club head mass the rock in the sling. The start of the downswing is similar to throwing a spear at the ball at a 45° angle to the target line, then as the lead arm comes down and flies off pointing a bit to left of the target that causes the vector of the club head mass to change to be down the target line through impact.

Side bending of the spine as the hand drop down over the back hip also plays an important role in keeping the trail shoulder back and allowing the club force to pull the trail arm straight. Before I figured that out I always swung the shoulders, hand and club with hips resulting in the lead arm chicken-winging and the trail arm bending at the elbow instead of being pulled straight.

Freddie letting his arms get pulled straight before trying to swing the club around in the finish is I think the reason his swing looks so smooth and fluid. Both arms being pulled straight arrests the momentum of the club like a jet landing on a carrier catching the arresting wire. Freddie seems to absorb so much of the remaining kinetic energy in the club head that way it just barely has enough left to make it up and around the shoulders when the wrists cock.

  3. You can watch the Pros like Fred with a great swing for years, but until you figure out that timing between your hips and your hands, you’ll continue to struggle with consistency.

  4. He’s right: it doesn’t look like it. It’s incredible how an average sized man with such an easy looking swing can hit it so far.

  5. This guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about. If he keeps working at it, he might have a decent swing and be able to play some pretty good golf one of these days.

  6. It's interesting that he says "down the line". Although his hips are rotating his release is down the line. Sometimes keeping those connections together properly is key. Great tip!

  7. Take a good look at him at the top. He talks about all he thinks about is a full shoulder turn, but look at his right hip how much it has turned!! The swing is from the bottom up.

  8. Back when Tiger was the longest guy on tour, Freddie wasn't too far behind. Tiger looks like he's coming out of his shoes and Freddie looks so effortless.

  9. Probably the number one reason why I’m hooking it. Releasing too early and over rotating my club face at impact. Now I’m getting tendinitis in my elbow. 😢

  10. I followed Freddy several times at Bay Hill…the th8ing that stood out was just watching him walk you could see how loose his body was, almost l9ike it was double jointed, that and also the dude has WIDE F'n shoulders

  11. Freddie… "I woke up like this…" tees the ball low then absolutely stripes it for 300 yards down the fairway.

  12. Everyone drives differently. A pro can talk to you about technique for days, but until you're out there on the range getting a feel for the ball and how your body uniquely moves as you engage it, you won't make any progress

  13. I played in a proam with Freddy , we were the first out that day, cold, hia first drive was 357 yards and shot a 63😂
