  1. Have watched loads of videos from Matt Fryer, Peter Finch and Rick Shiels. Always fun to watch but, honestly, at a loss as to why anyone would ever take a golf lesson from any of them!! They seem to hit as many poor shots as I do and I am a 12 HCP!!

  2. Couldn’t agree with you more about the sixty degree. I bought one off a colleague and I think I’ve used it twice!! My 54 does everything including bunkers.

  3. Well done Matt! I couldn’t agree with you more. I currently play off a 2 handicap and I play a Ping G425 max driver, Ping G425 3 hybrid and my highest lofted wedge is a Mizuno T22 56.
I have scored so much better after parking the low spin driver, my old Taylormade RSI driving iron and 60 degree wedge!

  4. I agree 💯 for high handicappers. I’m a 3 and I love my Mizuno 2 iron. I’m 58 and still hit it 250 and hardly ever miss a fairway. Even though I find it easy to hit, when I do hit it poorly it’s a long way home. If you can’t compress your irons stay away from a 2. If you can’t they are wonderful for short par 4’s, tight fairways and par 5 you can’t reach in 2.

  5. I haven't used or played a 2 iron or 3 iron in many years. The longest iron in my bag at the moment is a 5 iron.

My wedges consist of a pitching wedge, sand wedge, gap wedge and 58 degree Lob Wedge.

In reference to the woods, I have a Rogue ST Max Driver, an Adam's 3 wood and a Cobra 5 wood. I am highly considering adding a 7 wood in the very near future, probably from Ping. I also have 3, 4 and 5 Hybrids at my disposal. I can toss them in my bag depending on the course I am playing.

  6. I went back to a 58 degree sand wedge with a wide sole, Out of green side rough or green side bunkers it almost completely eliminates duffs or over shoots. I play it almost exclusively for 20 yard and under shots or on the very rare occasion where I need to hit over something or up a very steep hill to the green. For everything else my max lofted wedge is 53 degrees. I don't carry what most would call a driving iron. Instead, it's the 4 iron of a set that is set to21 degrees with a Nippon GH950 lightweight steel (98 grams) mid/high launch shaft. Great launch with good height to carry 210. I also carry a 22 degree hybrid that goes very slightly farther but the main reason is for additional height, land angle and play out of bunkers or rough. If there's nothing to worry about in the fairway and or it's windy and I don't need driver or 4 wood then it's the 4 iron. If I need to stop the ball short of an obstacle and not worry about excess roll out or to stick a green from 210 or so then it's the hybrid. I hated rotating out clubs so I built my bag to handle anything I will willingly face on the course. Nope, not playing in 40 MPH gusts. And I don't care if it takes 3 to get home on a par 5 because I had to layup short of a hazard rather than risking a perfect shot with a three wood to hit over it.

  7. Agree on the Driver and long iron. My 60* wedge is my out for short bunker shots and those tight delicate shots where I have little space to work with. Otherwise it is SW or PW or maybe a Texas wedge.

  8. I disagree w/the 2-iron thought that you have to be good to use one. Not if you get the right one. For me it was the opposite. I’m currently a 11-handicap, but I started using the 2-iron when I was somewhere around a 20 handicap bc I just kept spraying the driver everywhere. The 2-iron is so much easier to control than a driver for lesser skilled players in my experience. I’m a bit better now & more consistent from round to round, but I still use the 2-iron off the tee a ton, especially on narrow fairways. I agree that it’s not the most versatile club though. I really only use mine (Titleist U510) off the tee.

  10. Horses for courses, on a windy day do I want a low draw into the wind with a low iron or a high ball blown off course.
I want to choose the clubs for the course and the wind, especially if money's involved.

  11. Agree and disagree about the lob wedge. I took one out the bag and ran with 50/56 and my short game improved considerably. However, I am terrible out of bunkers so putting a 60 in but being disciplined to only use to chunk out of bunkers has worked very well for me.

  12. I can’t believe how many golfers I run into who either: 1. Bragging about their 60 degree ( with evidence proving it does not improve their shots compared with using their 54degree). 2. Seeming to be in desperate need to go guy one. Just stick with 54 ( or the 48).

  13. A 60 degree shouldn't be used by any level of golfer? Dude… just… no. Learn to hit a 60 degree wedge properly, and besides the putter, it will save you the most strokes of any club in your bag, especially if you don't hit every green in regulation.

If you're just a recreational golfer playing on the weekend once in a while and don't want to learn it, then fine. But saying "any level of golfer" just isn't right.

  14. One of my all time favorite clubs was a Staff Tour Blades 2 iron from Wilson. Great from the tee on tight fairways

  15. Boo! I use the 60 extensively/successfully for chipping; it's great if you put the time in to learn different chips with it. Also, it's my go-to club for those tweener shots in the 20 to 50 yard range. It's a recovery club for me, never a full swing.
