The titlieist prov1 is probably the most popular golf ball of all time, but why is that, how did it get there, and why is it still so prominent over two decades before it came out?

  1. Starting the game as a kind I am now in my late 50th, still playing of HDCP 3 – in tournaments always ProV1, in private also Vice, Taylormade, Callaway … – nearly of any age and quality; whatever is in my bag.
When I grew up Titelst balata was the ball of the top amateurs and professionals. So it was prestigious to play also a ball from at least the same brand. Not for me since I played Spalding irons. My best round is still a 65 (-7) I played with a TopFlite XL!
My recommendation to all players with HDCP >10 who want to get better: play any ball you get (as long it´s not a range ball) and save the money for lessons at a good coach. More greens in regulation and better short game is the real game changer, not a ball for 5€++ !
Have fun and enjoy this wonderful game.

  2. Did you know that, at every tournament the pros play, more players MISS THE CUT playing Titleist ball than all other balls COMBINED?

  3. Should not make vids when you don't know the history, and have a predetermined bias against Titleist. The Pro V was a giant leap also from the Tour Accuracy.
Played the TA faithfully for a year until I found a Pro V in the rough -> WTF I am missing out! 😮

  4. If you ask anyone who checks their balls COG before playing them, they will all tell you that Titleist has the least duds. That's why I always thought they were so popular, because they have the best quality control.

  5. I have tested all the major brands and a handful of small time brands, I find I have the best spin control and distance control withe the prov1….. I wish it was a cheaper ball but in my case it’s not. I will say the best feeling ball was a Bridgestone ball but it would hook too much

  6. I’ve only bought one box of pro v1 in my life and that was to give to my adult son for Christmas, I’m not good enough to justify spending that much money on a ball I’m just going to lose lol. I usually buy the Callaway super soft max because I read a few articles that said it’s a good ball for older golfers with slower swings like myself and it’s typically one of the cheapest balls at my local shop, that’s good enough for me.

  7. Just a crap video. I play golf from 1984 And i am pro since 1999. And i had experienced thé first ballata balls And profesionál 90 And 100. Thé ball was great And pro V1 Is still great. And IT does not mean thé others Are bad. If you can play golf ( not you ass i see) means HCP +1 And less, you know to never buy a used golf ball. Nonsense video!

  8. Ive been playing golf for more than 50 years and there have been TONS of changes in equipment during my life. I remember when the ProV1 came out. I can tell you without an an ounce of doubt, the ProV1 helped my game due mainly to less spin than a wound ball. If you have ever played with a wound golf ball, you know what Im talking about. Wound golf balls spin much faster than multi piece ones and what you might consider a hard fade with a ProV1 was a hell of a slice with a wound ball. Same goes if you hit draws and hooks. That ball is without a doubt, responsible for its reputation. It lowered scores for everyone who played wound golf balls. To say it's not much better would be the same as saying a modern day 460CC titanium driver and a classic Persimmon driver are equal, or not much different, which is ludicrous. To comment about which ball is best for a golfers game, the answer is it doesnt really matter. Even inexpensive golf balls of today are way better than they were pre 1990. Until your handicap gets into single digits, when you can start shaping your shots on purpose and get a decent chipping skills, then that's when you start looking at specific balls to hone your skills.

  9. Wrong!! They are the best and I also was playing when they arrived on the scene and I still play them at 63 years old and a 5 hdc. I’ve tested many many balls over the years and some these days are certainly comparable but give me the choice and it’s Pro V1 period.

  10. Overpriced to pay tour players.
Just play a Maxfli tour or a Vice Pro and save your sweet moola from uncle Rico.

  11. Tiger has been very open about saying that the Nike balls he was playing at his peak, were actually Bridgestone balls with a Nike stamp.

  12. As a beginner, these expensive balls don't do anything for me. Anything I happen to have is good enough as long as it isn't damaged – I will probably lose the thing anyways after a few shots. If I ever run out of balls, I would go to your sponsor and order a tub full of something or another.

  13. I've been a golf professional for over 20 years. Game changer for me? Bridgestone E6. Hands down the best golf ball out there.

  14. I disagree with what you are saying. I use the PROV1 ball and my game improved dramatically especially around the greens. If Titleist was all about markering, the Tour players wouldn't play it. The thing you are paying for in addition to the R and D You are paying for consistency ball by ball.

  15. I was a huge tour balata fan in the 90’s … only down part to those were when you would skull one it would cut the ball .. but man they spun so good on a green

  16. kislux bags are beautiful and I have never been disappointed with a handbag. The leather is soft and the hardware is durable. The design never goes out of style.

  17. I disagree about the nike ball being better than a ProV1. Maybe for you but overall? Idk. Nike has all but quit making golf products at this point. And the ONLY reason they wanted in on golf was for sponsorship purposes. They had no interest in golf before Tiger came along. The rise of Nike in golf goes hand in hand with his rise to glory. And once he fell off so did Nike. Think im wrong? Go look at the sales. Nike wanted to get into golf and put together a development team but their early gear was trash. Their later gear became some of the best on the market but id go Taylormade or Callaway before Nike. I'd rather use something made by a company who specializes in one particular sport with a proven track record over a jack of all trades sports company who came in late to the game and just wants to cash in. Thats just smart business

  18. You found the reason why The Nike ball didn’t work for many players ? The cover would tear up after a few holes. With a price tag that would cost you more than for the price of your green fee.

  19. I wouldn't be surprised if Tiger knew his ball was special and therefore told them to not make the balls readily available because he wanted to keep his advantage as long as possible.

  20. The average golfer isn't going to notice a difference, that's why there's such a delta between improvement for the average, the scratch, and the tour card player.
Average and scratch aren't striking the ball accurately enough to get outlier-type results, but a guy with a tour card certainly is.

  21. Titleist already had a majority of pros under contract and most were going to stick with the Titleist wound ball until they came out with a multi layer solid ball.
As he said, the PV1 was no better than any other comparable ball at the time, but they had the pros and even hacks want to play what the pros play.

  22. Thank you for this, it's a great explanation of what happened then with the advancements in golf ball tech. Always wondered what happened to Spalding/Top Flite, I still have my Spalding Pro Flite clubs from the 90s and in so many ways they are still so nice to hit (even compared to my P790s). They still feel great.
Don't know why there are so many negative comments here, not deserved. Thanks again.

  23. 7:00 wait a tick? Pretty Sure the Story goes Tiger was working with Bridgestone back then, and they painted it a Nike.

  24. The ProV1 didn't directly replace the Titleist Tour Balata.

At the time I was playing on the Professional level.

On Tour most players had already ditched my beloved Titleist Tour Balata. Many for the Titleist Professional.

The Professional was a little longer, a little more durable, but it was also a little more firm around the green.

The ProV1 took over the entire golf ball world because it wasn't a little bit longer than Titleist Tour Balata, it was A LOT LONGER.

Golf was a better game when the Tour Balata was the primary ball on Tour.

More spin around the green allowed imagination and feel to be more frequently observed.

It made a much higher percentage of chip shots, shots that the player was believing could be holed.

The Tour Balata was also magnificent in its ability to make 90* turns with long to mid irons.

Because the ball was so soft, big giant swings could be made with the ball only traveling 10-20 yards.

This characteristic created rescue and save shots that haven't existed since.

    And my oh my….

On really fast greens that marshmallow of a Tour Balata putted gentle as a cotton swab.

To this day, in a perfect world, I would roll those babies for sure.

Now I pray and search far and wide for a ball that is longer than the ProV1 at Senior swing speeds, cuz that's all the horsepower left under the hood.😢
