Sylvan Glen, the infamous Sylvan Glen golf course in Troy Michigan. It’s the most played golf course in the state with over 40K annual rounds. Is that because they’re open year-round? Probably. Is that because their tee sheet is booked full in 6 minute increments from 6:30am to 6:30pm every single day through the summer. Maybe. They both definitely help, As for the course itself it gets a lot of hate. It’s rare to hear anyone say good things about the course, yet everyone keeps going back. If you can look past the slow pace of play and worn mid-summer conditions there are positives to be had. Sylvan has become my go-to Shoulder season course because you know it will be open and the water management is great! A few years back the course invested millions into new irrigation and drainage. It shows. Those sloppy fall or spring days are so much more playable at Sylvan Glen. Just don’t sprint to book that summer Saturday round unless you’re ready to settle in for a 6-hour round.
The TROON purchase of Sylvan and Sanctuary from the city of Troy might have been one of their savviest course investments. A cash cow in the smack dab middle of the metro Detroit populous. We thought that TROON may bump up the course prestige a bit with the purchase, but a few years in it is clear that TROON bought it as that, a cash cow. Sylvan nor Sanctuary have improved and may have gotten worse since the TROON purchase.
