I think watching very good golfers is one of the mistakes amateurs make.
I know, that sounds absurd but with so much very good golf being so easily available it’s easy to fall into the mentality of that being the way you’re supposed to be playing…. ‘I saw a guy on YouTube playing like this so that’s how I should be playing!’
Trying to birdie every hole. Making it to a par 5 green in 2. Using the 60 degree too much. Trying to shape shots.
All of these are things a low handicapper might expect, but for most of us in the mid handicap range not only is it not realistic, it’s actively harming our ability to score well and improve.
I saw these things all the time to my friends!! Great insight Matt! Keep up the great content! I love the lessons, In the Red and Record Breakers with the Great Peter Finch!!
IMO The 60° wedge was invented by Lucifer. Skull machines, the lot of 'em!!
I removed the 60! I chip with a 54 now better results!
Thanks Matt, I never use 60 for full shots any more or chipping onto the green, I do like it for 30-40y pitch shots played off the back foot with a half swing however👍
Agreed – Try to never hit a wedge 100% …. Good advice
The second scenario and out of the sand is the only play I use my 58* LW. The first I would use my 50* and the last I’d bump and run with the pW or 9 or putt. Super confident with my 58 bc I only use it when needed
99% of all amateurs should bin their 60 wedge for all the examples shown.
5.8 handicap. My 60° is magic for me.
i like my 60. only use when absolutely necessary though
I use my 60 degree from the nasty thick stuff around the green, or when i need to send it 200 meter up in the air to get to the pin when i short-sided myself. I only use my 60 degree from 20 meter and in, but I use it all the time, I even had a 64 degree 🙂 A 60 degree is perfect if you need high spinny shorts – do not bum-and-run with it, just remeber….do not de-accelerate it – as you wil chunck it…. my wedges are 60/56/54/P and when it is dry i take wedges with 8 degree bounce and when it is wet i use 12 degree 🙂 short game is key…. 🙂
My 60 is for short-sided green side bunkers, and scooping balls out of shallow water hazards, thats it 😂😂
If you're getting the 52 to the hole with a miss hit surely you'll go through the back with a good strike
I never take a full swing with my 60. I have a low bounce model (6 degrees) which I use for shots from a few feet up to about 60 yards (the wet work). It's an MVP club for me.
Excellent demo, chunk one two feet, next one undercut the ball and it didn’t move, third time lucky in to the bunker. See it quite often, don’t use one myself for those reasons.
I use my 60 a lot and like it on full shots and green side bunkers ,but I’ve stopped using it around the greens as in your last point .chipping around with a 9 -8 or pitching wedge is far better ,took me 20 years to work that one out .Another point worth mentioning is For most recreational golfers it’s better with more bounce on your wedge’s especially on average uk courses ,I bought the wrong gap wedge some time ago ,very skinny with hardly any bounce ,I thin that thing most times ,it needs to go .
Never liked a 60. My preference is 50 then 56. I tend to use a 9 iron a lot and only use the 56 if I need height. Recently changed to Taylor Made MG4 and absolutely love them. I have also added a 46 in place of standard wedge.
I dropped the lob wedge from my bag years ago. Best thing I could have done. SW & GW are the only specialty wedges in the bag.
For 90 yards I'll be hitting a soft PW, I'll have a 60% chance of getting around the green an AW it drops to 30% and anything with more loft will probably go 5 yards or 150 if I thin the tits off it
Great tips Matt!
I got rid all of my wedges, I was someone who loved flopping shots with my 60*. I recently broke 90, and I attributed a lot of it to just playing bump and runs with my low number irons or the Texas Wedge.
I use it when im below the hole around the greens. Even low bunkers.
My 56° and 50° are my worker bees.
I'm a 10 handocap now, but have spent most of my life at 15, or not playing enough rounds per year to even make a handicap. I got my first 60 wedge in the late 90s, and use it all the time from 50 yd in, and love that I can drop a shot (mostly) precisely where I want. BUT! It takes paractice. Lots of practice. Also lots of ability to read the specifics of the grass and lie for each shot. No two are the same. It's the details in swing angle, lie angle, ect. that makes it work. YOu gotta practice, and you gotta fully commit to the shot each time you use it.
I LOVE it for scenario #2. Would never use it of #3 … thats always a 7/8/9 iron pitch and run, depending on conditions.
I use a pitching wedge from that distance. Being 78 years old, I don’t hit it like a young stud.
I never use anywhere near a full lob wedge at all. Usually used out of bunkers and if needed around the greens. In fact I very rarely use a full shot with any of my wedges
I 100% disagree with this video.
