Snell was a free agent last year and NO ONE signed him to a long-term contract so he had to accept a 1 year deal with the Giants. Now you are crying because he signed with the Dodgers?? What you guys are missing is the what 52 million signing bonus which is a big chunk of the contract. This gives Snell this money at today's economy. I was an original season ticket holder for the Diamondbacks and I can tell you that in the 25 years of their existence the ownership has not figured out how to make the area a baseball town. This is a basketball town. The area is large enough to spend more than they do if they could have figured out how to get the population to the stadium or watch them on TV. We are NOT a Small Market area. This is a town where the fans only half heartedly support the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers market their team. Another thing, when teams like the Dodgers exceed the soft cap and send millions to other teams, what do those teams do with the money. I believe these teams pocket the money for profit instead of re-investing in their product. Just saying!

Baseball need a Hard Cap. But how would the player's union ever go for it. Top players make 35 million plus and rising where others make 800 thousand. Basketball and Football have figured it out but greed of players and owners in the MLB will eventually kill baseball.

Keep in mind, the Dodgers might be thinking, Flaherty and Buehler are gone. Their salaries equal Snell's salary. A wash. Also the pitchers returning from injuries were going to be paid one way or another. I do not know if the Dodgers will get more starting pitchers during free agency or not. But right now there has not been any adds to their payroll for pitching.
We'll see how much money is deferred on Soto's contract. I guarantee you no matter where he goes that contract is going to be deferred heavily. This strategy has been possible for decades. The Bobby Bonilla deal(which is actually done 1st by Brett Saberhagen) is still going to be paid until 2035. More teams are going to follow this model and regulating this model will just kill mid level teams to make a competative offer so they can remain competative in the post season. The one thing that MLB has to look at is if its fair anymore to offer the REDUCED Tax rate on contracts that defer money to years after the contract has expired. If they try to make a cap on how much money teams can spend on players then in all likely hood there will be a work stoppage.
Differing money is not new. Ken Griffey Jr. just was paid 3 million by the Reds in 2024 for the last if his contract. Quit crying its not the Dodgers fault that the rest of the Billionaires are to tight to spend!!

The deferred money is counted toward the competitive balance tax. It’s counted at the present value which is accurate. Deferred money usually hurts the players so if they agree to the contract, why should the league object especially since it’s available to every team. The reason why dodgers have an advantage is because they have created themselves to be the destination, it takes years to build that type of reputation and they should reap the benefits of that. The rules are not unfair, just certain teams suck at playing or not even trying to win.
Why isn’t anyone suggesting that these multi billionaire owners be subject to a salary floor? Too many of these guys only care about getting their share of TV money. Let’s force these guys to invest in their teams and be more innovative in generating revenue.
